I was torn between a custom build or a t3x for a lightweight left handed rifle. Decided on the Tikka and purchased enough Cabelas gift cards (they're 10% off currently) to cover a t3x.

My plan is to use a WTO switchlug between two calibers, and take advantage of the long action. Sportsmatch rings are on order, and SWFA 6x42 will be going on top. I'd like both calibers to be relatively economical to shoot, and also something that could be found on a shelf if needed. Currently, I don't handload.

I'm looking for 6.5mm and .30cal cartridges that share a boltface and fit the bill. Right now, I'm leaning on the 6.5x55 for general practice, hunting coues/blacktail/antelope and 30-06 for elk sized game. The AI versions sound appealing too...

What would y'all recommend to take full advantage of the t3x action?

I'm also considering splitting the difference of two cals, and just building a 280ai, but it seems like the mag system wouldn't allow for a properly loaded cartridge?

The only left hand models from Cabelas are the following
T3x Superlite: 6.5 creed, 300 winmag, .308
T3x Lite: 300 winmag, .308, .30-06, 7rem mag, 270win

For the WTO set up, I would check out the 6.5 PRC and 300 WSM. I’ve toyed with the idea many times.

I’m on the fence with going to a .257 SST and 300 WSM, but I can’t decide if I want the full hassle of a wildcat in the .257. It’s performance is NUTS, but I also like the idea of off the shelf.

The 6.5 PRC and 300 WSM seem like a good two barrel setup. A little more per shot than 6.5x55 and 30-06, but also more performance.

If I decided on the PRC and WSM, it sounds like the best route would be to purchase the 300 Win Mag T3x, and just sell the barrel? Would I want to modify the bolt stop to run these two? Or keep things setup as a long action to run longer COAL?

I have 2 T3x rifles, a 6.5 creed and a .223 and both came with the bolt stop for long actions. I have regular T3 .270 WSM and I had to buy a long action bolt release from Brownells when I modified the magazine for longer OAL.

I would run both WSM and PRC on a LA bolt stop. That way you can seat bullets where they need to be.

The benefit of the short mags over the 30/06 is you can seat bullets out. If you want to push a 30/06 to the max, 3.4 it tight. And, the factory 11 twist will limit you if you want heavy for caliber 215-230 gr bullets.

I've got two T3's. First one below is a Superlite in 7mm Rem Mag, second one is a Lite in .338 Win Mag. Swapped out stocks on both to B&C, fluted bolts and ditched the plastic bottom metal and mags. I'll probably replace the bolt shrouds and possibly bolt knobs to finish them off. I really like these rifles and they are a dream to carry compared to what I was used to. Both shoot lights out too.

Trr15,

How do you like that Maven scope? I'm considering one but haven't been able to find much feedback anywhere.

I like it. Nothing fancy, but its light, clear and bright. The SHR reticle is nice but a little thicker than I would’ve preferred. Overall it’s a great fit for my lightweight, sub-400 yard mountain rifle/elk hammer.

As a long action? I'd expect 2800-2900 FPS in a long action with moderate pressures. Maybe a bit better if you max it out with RL26 or similar.
