For your first attempt I'd say that turned out pretty good! Is that maple and is it a solid blank or a laminate?

It is, I definitely had some screw ups but I guess I won’t be as upset when I beat it up. It’s maple with three pieces laminate together.

A heirloom rifle, .458wm with a rosewood stock that I find myself gawking at a lot. Grandad built it in the early 80’s for a Cape buffalo hunt, but the airline lost it on his way there so it didn’t get used. Luckily he did get it back weeks later. I’m currently restocking it slowly with a nice Turkish but with a left hand fit to it, so I can take it to Africa for its intended purpose one day, I think he’d like that. That rear sight hates my left hand thumb and the steel butplate hates my boney shoulder lol, I haven’t pulled its trigger since 1999, though it’s the first centerfire I shot as a wee boy. “Grouse loads” were a hoot!

No it’s a gun by Ralf Martini. He’s built a few for us. He’s finishing one for me now in 300 H&H. He was in Canada but now took a job as the head of production for Hartman & Weiss last year. He’s an incredible gun maker. That barrel started out as a 2-1/4” bland if I recall correctly. Goes from octagon to round, sling mount, front site etc is all integral. Also has a full legnth raised rib. And the crazy part is he didn’t do it on CNC.

That's pretty jaw-dropping, there aren't many people around who can run a traditional mill and do handwork at that level. Thanks for sharing the details, that's a special gun. Would love to see more photos.

That stippling is amazing, as is the machining on that barrel. The colors. All of it. Amazing example.
