Wow. This thread is killing me. My backcountry plans have been cancelled at the very last minute for the last two years. I thought I was recovered from withdrawal and back to planning mode. But all of the great camp pics are making me want to go right now!

Starting 2020 right with a short trip back to my little private sea island. It's on the edge of the Dawho/Wadmalaw river system, a salt water estuary near Edisto, SC.

Charleston looks gloomy, but the destination is to the south, which looks promising!


Our destination is this little island on the Dawho river.


Nice! Made it to the island just before dark.


Last week I carried 68 pounds in my pack. Had lots of stuff to try out in the field. This week it's 40 pounds. 7 extra pounds in that old sleeping pad, since my new NEMO Tensor leaked last week and REI hasn't sent the replacement yet. Forgot how much I like foam vs. a balloon, but the weight penalty is brutal, even for the modern versions listed on the REI website (2 extra pounds).


Got everything set up before dark and had a nice supper under the stars.


Cup of peppermint tea before settling in for the night.


Clear, crisp morning in the Lowcountry.


A nice sunrise over the Dawho River in the distance.


Leave no trace.


The road home.

Yep they even haul in benches and a permanent fire pit.
Looks like it costs an awful lot of $$ to sit on that bench! 〽
