I am looking into a cap or cargo system for my truck geared towards hunting. I really like the idea of the Leitner active cargo system. Does anyone have one? Do you like it more than a topper? What organizers do you run in your gear pods?

Not a fan.

Those systems eat space. Here is my truck fully loaded for a week of camping including everything.

I have everything secured under the locked tonneau cover...pull it out and toss up the tent.

I can use my truck as a truck the rest of the time too. Not a fan of toppers and storage systems...they just add weight, look ugly and limit access and functionality. JMO...I could be wrong.

Been using this same tent since 1999.

They look like they would do well for hauling gear and still have the bed available for lumber or other loads. Kind of like if kifaru made a bed storage system, modular and make it your way

I do like the look of a tonneau cover better but there is no way I can fit everything under it while going on a hunt. I thought about pulling a trailer but I don’t think I want to do that in the mountains and back country. Trying to find that balance of practical and and useful but not too much. Thanks for the input guys!

I have had one on my two ford raptors for four years of use and probably over 100k miles now. I have a large Rhino Rack Pioneer platform bolted to the cross bars also. I installed some heavier Deaver HD springs to deal with it all loaded down. It has been very solid and very useful but depends on your needs. Looking back a reinforced camper shell/cap with the flat rack on top may have been a better choice to keep dirt and water out of the bed. I put a second spare on top with other bulky items and a misc gear box for hunting trips, leaves the bed clear for camping gear and two 150 Quart coolers for elk meat - I live in TN and its a bit of logistical nightmare with getting a lot of game meat home from out west. If you want to throw a dirt bike in the bike you just slide the rear bar forward, it takes seconds. lots of options for gear boxes and other attachments. I will post some pics. I set up a separate tent or just throw cots out for decent weather during antelope and Sept elk hunts when I am on the move daily. It provides endless tie down spots obviously but your gear is exposed at trailheads also.

Here are a couple pics of my setup

My truck looks like Bruce's when I leave for a hunt. Everything neatly packed under a hard tonneau cover.

I might make two additions. I have a hitch motorcycle carrier complete with motorcycle that I'll take on occasion, or I'll pull a small trailer. The trailer goes when it's more than just me on the trip. It is lifted a little on 28" tires so it will go about anywhere that I will take my truck.

What I figured out is that adding these racks just makes for an excuse to take a bunch of stuff you don't need and won't use.

You should see me weeding out all of the crap buddies try to take. It's like they never went camping before. The amount of duplication is insane.

I have been also looking a small Off road trailer With a Roof top tent, a real investment for the good ones. Would like to have a small fridge and cooktop with ability to haul a four wheeler / dirt bike. With two people just the truck is a full load on a hunting trip for sure. It’s nice to have everything with wherever you go, if the raptor will fit I can get there usually, with lots of custom pinstripes

Sweet ride wweaver! I have it down to your setup or a decked system with a topper. I do like having everything locked up. I have a F150 in the same setup you have. Too many options is a curse sometimes!

Been thinking about the same. I missed a used military trailer on fb classifieds for $200 last week that seems like it would have worked great for some 2 tracks. Would have take a little diy to put a top on it for the tent to sit on.

I would do a commercial style topper that has the double doors that open out the back so that you don't have to reach over the tailgate to get to things as well as the doors that lift up on each sides so that you can get to anything in the back without crawling in. I would then put some pull out drawers in the bed for storage as well as a platform for sleeping on. I would also put a ladder rack on top so that you can put a load basket, pop up tent or whatever on top.

That rack has the cool factor I think nowadays, I would not want all my stuff covered in dust constantly! Even just trying to open those boxes I would think the dust is terrible.

I have an F-150 with the Decked drawers and a shell.
The drawers are quite nice to keep things organized and easily accessible. It also makes a great flat sleeping surface. Only problem is that it limits cargo height with the shell. I guess everything has its trade offs.

I had the Decked system on my Dodge 2500. It was rarely in the way and had all sorts of stuff ride on top of it with no issues. No camper shell.

Bought a Titan with a tonneau cover after that, so didn't replace the Decked system. The tonneau worked very nice to keep valuables out of sight and most everything could ride in the back keeping the cab pretty well free of "debris" (aka all my crap).

Don't have either truck any more and still contemplating a drawer system for my old Land Cruiser. Really want to make one that pivots out of the back, but haven't figured out how to make that happen as of yet.

I’m a diy guy so of course I’m thinking about building my own.
A pretty good setup but that’s a lot of work!

Not sure I see the benefit of this over a regular topper. Besides this screams look at how extreme I am instead of look how old and retired I am.
I can remove my shell with literally 4 bolts and and back in business. Yet everything stored in it is dry and secure. This looks like a 12 white claw project for removal.

The real advantage of Leitner rack is putting dirt bikes in the back or small four wheeler. But yes as many have the dirt factor does suck and you have to have everything in waterproof containers. There is no perfect solution to it and so many choices. The Leintner boxes on the side lock and are dust and waterproof. Been a solid setup for four years now.
