Hey guys I had arthroscopy done on my knee last Wednesday and I just got word from the doctor that he removed 40% of my medial meniscus due to it being torn, which was a huge surprise for me. I'm 27 and not so worried looking ahead the next 5-10 years but what worries is the toll that hiking and backpacking can take on it. My father is 55 and in need of a new knee and it gives me the chills thinking that could be me in 25-30 years or less. I'm not looking for any medical advice per se but just want to hear of others experiences having a large portion of a meniscus removed and still hunting/backpacking/hiking on it regularly. Thanks!

I had some removed at 25 and more removed at 45. At 45 they did the micro-fracture to try and stimulate cartilage regeneration. I am now 57 and heading to Alaska this fall. That said, I guard my knees. Some short runs and sprints on grass only. Lots of biking. No heavy squats or lunges. I always lead with my good knee in the mountains and listen to my body.

Pure vegetable based Glucosamine is magic for me. (chrondrotine made me sick) Went off it twice and knee pain came back. Good luck.

The key is to be careful going forward. Had mine trimmed several times over the last 25+ yrs. as noted take supplements, have plenty of strength in your legs and ass,but be careful on the workouts chosen and something not talked about much, stay lean! The more weight you carry daily goes a long ways to damaging knees over decades. Good luck

I am in the same boat. I had full acl/mcl surgery at 19 and just had a good portion of my meniscus removed again two weeks ago at 35. The good news though is right now my knee feels better than it has in a long time.
