Last year i drew a cow tag in northern Nevada. Killed a cow on November 10th and was amazed about all the rut action i was seeing the 4 days i was up there. I drew a late bull tag same unit this year, just a touch earlier on the dates.

could the same later rut trend continue this year? Has anyone been noticing later rutting action going as well?

I have no experience with northern Nevada but I hunted an early November season in northeastern Oregon for several years. One year there was a crazy amount of rut activity. Bulls were screaming at each other and chasing cows all over. I only saw that behavior the one year, but saw some pretty big bulls still with the cow groups one other season.

So, my opinion is that it varies from year to year, but I can’t say for sure. I wish you the best of luck and please keep us posted!

Hmm interesting! Yeah right along same timeframe then🤔. I thought the elk tend to rut a little earlier than that but have heard last couple years guys talking about and seeing some later rut activity in nevada kind of cool to see first hand. Lots of bugling, bulls chasing cows, and sparing.

Thanks, appreciate it!

In the area I was hunting, the primary rut took place in late September and early October. That November activity was definitely secondary rut activity. I don’t know all the triggers, but I don’t believe it’s photo period alone. Too much variation in timing from year to year from what I’ve seen.

Cows come into estrus every 20 days until bred. September a large majority get bred typically around 9/20 +- a few days. 20 days later early October 2nd estrus, 20days later late October/early November 3rd estrus. Each time the window is shorter, as there are fewer cows yet to be bred. These further windows can be intense, if you catch it right. Have taken many bulls in that 2nd/3rd window going bonkers with rifle in hand.

That’s great info. Thank you for sharing!
