Hello All,

My buddy and I are looking for a last minute hunt this year. We are from Michigan, but usually hunt out of state at least once a year. We both had things happening in our life this year so we never planned a trip(he got married/paid for a wedding, and I am building a garage and house). We figured it would be best on our wallets to wait a year.

However, we are now kicking ourselves in the butt and trying to throw something together last minute. If you were putting together a last minute trip and needed an OTC license. What would you hunt for? And where would you go? We are trying to keep it simple but fun!

Thanks!

What do you want to hunt? What weapon? and how far are you willing to travel?

Texas...can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be chasing everything from whitetail to things you can't pronounce :)

Colorado. Lots of opportunity for elk hunting there and information of the department website to help you figure out a place.

Like the guys have said above, there are lots of options depending on your preferred method of take.

Archery:
Elk in Idaho and Colorado
Mule deer in Colorado
Coues and mule deer in Arizona
Pronghorn in South Dakota and Kansas

Rifle:
2nd or 3rd or Plains Seasons Elk in Colorado
Idaho Elk and Mule Deer
Maybe some leftover Coues tags in Arizona
Find and pay for landowner tags anywhere else (cow elk in New Mexico for example)

I know a few outfitters here in Texas that can get you into just about anything, slightly limited to time of year on a few species (axis bucks are mainly a summer hunt).

Go to Nebraska and stack up some whitetails with the bow in public land. It’s cheap and you can kill a bunch of deer

Thanks everyone! I know there wasn't much info to what I wanted. I was trying to keep it open and not restricted so I'd get different options which I think worked.

We have talked about going back to Nebraska, or pig hunting in Georgia. But I'm going to look into a few options that have been suggested here as well.

No need to go all the way down to Georgia to hunt hogs. I’ve hunted them on public land in MS. $30 or so for a small game tag and you can hunt them any time. Rimfire only though unless it is deer or turkey season.

i dont think this is entirely accurate. Yes, it is a 2 buck state, however, the doe tags are extremely limited as of the last few years due to EHD. I wouldnt say you could kill more than 2-3 deer usually.

Sorry for the misunderstanding! Where in from harvest 4-6 deer in one trip would qualify as a bunch of deer.

Simple but fun (and cheap): WY pronghorn

There's still plenty of doe/fawn tags available for the Eastern part of the state. You can each get a few tags. Just know your land boundaries.

I thought you couldn't get the leftover antelope tags this year, unless you applied back in June? I thought they changed it for this year, where it was no longer open to everyone.

MS isn't saving him travel time from Michigan if he's considering GA. That's a wash.

All depends on where you go in the State. The river antlerless tags are still abundant and allow you to "kill a bunch of deer" but you need to be in the river cooridors and there sin't much public land there. Actually, there isn't much public land anywhere in the State.

That is correct for the leftover draw.

But my understanding is that what is available now (leftover draw was June 12) is first come, first serve. They aren't choice units at this point, but they are available.
