I need a pair of quality gaiters that are not camo. I've heard the Kenetreks break apart. The Kuiu's look really good. Has anyone used field tested them?
Kuiu gaiters are very good and waterproof when new. But as with most of their gear is not super durable.
The OR gaiters would be harder wearing but are noisy.
Swazi make a great gaiter that is quiet but its expensive.
Macpac make some of the most durable gaiters out there but are noisy
Cactus Climbing's gaiters are good and durable, but noisy and a larger size(stuff falls down the top if you have skinny legs.
I am currently using the Kuiu ones but may upgrade to Swazi when they fall apart
Last year I wore the Kuiu a ton. Several creek crossings, wet grass, rain and busting brush with no leaks or issues. This year was crazy hot and dry so no need to put them on.
I have kuiu sitka and outdoor research expedition crocodiles.
Kuiu are the slimmest fitting. Sitka feel best, expedition crocs are bulkiest and most noisy.
But, I would say that the OR exped crocs are the most durable, sitka uppers are least durable, kuiu in middle.
Your boot strap is likely to be the first piece to go. Especially if you spend a lot of time of rock.
If you intend to wear with crampons, the exped crocs would be top choice.
Just my experiences. Uses might be different than yours.
I prefer Kuiu for bowhunting, as perhaps the best balance between quietness and durability, but they are not really either. They are quieter than OR but less durable, and louder than the Kenetrk but I have not gotten to really test their durability.
I've had a set of Kuiu for three or four years now. Not sure which. They have held up well and are still waterproof. Wear them a couple weeks elk hunting and a month or so mountain lion hunting.
