Hi Folks,

Russ Roberts here from deep South Texas. I just joined and greatly appreciate being a member of the community. I am finishing up the process of re-outfitting for backpacking in Colorado and Wyoming--mid to late seasons.

As part of gearing up, I just ordered a full set of KUIU clothing for layering--as set forth below, and would appreciate any comments as to the order in which these items should be layered. (I am about 5-10 1/2 and 225 pounds, but hoping to drop to 200:

Bottoms:
Peleton 97 XL
Peleton 200 Zip off Bottom--XL
Pro Pant Size 40 Waist (I am a 38 but hear they run "athletic" in sizing.
Chugash NX Rain Pant--XL

Tops:
Peleton 118 LS Crew T--XL
Peleton 240 Full Zip Hoodie --XXL
Ultra Super-Down Hoodie--XXL
Chugash NX Rain Jacket--XXL

I would have chosen the Peloton 118 for the base layer on the pants as well, but they are out of stock until September--which, with my luck would end up being September, 2100. When the package arrives next week, I will be able to try all of the stuff on and see for myself--and exchange items that turn out to be sized wrong for my own layering--however, I would appreciate any wisdom you can share with me.

My main concerns are (1) how--and in what order the Peleton 240 and Down Hoodies will/should layer with each other when it is really cold and (2) same question with regard to the Peleton 97 and 200 pant layers.

Thanks and best regards,

Russ

Puffy over the Peloton.

I run my 240 with a KUIU Kenai or Sitka Kelvin on top 75% of the time once October rolls around.

240 is not very abrasion resistant & is not a great piece on the outside if your active in brush. One of the new strong fleece pieces may have been a better choice. It does cut wind however for being such a light piece

Have you tried any of those tops on? I’m 220 and shorter than you and I wear an xl in most tops.

Kuiu has some Vias 118 bottoms in XL in their outlet. Just remember you cant return Outlet items.

I’d wear them just how you listed it.

My only concern is that late season Wyoming to me means damn cold, and that’s not enough warmth if you’re planning on sitting and glassing much.

YMMV, but I typically run pretty hot and I’d be chilled in that setup once temps dipped into the teens after not moving for about 2 hours.

Late season I would want the Superdown Pro jacket and pants. Maybe get the ultra vest and use it alone during earlier hunts or warmer temps and layer it under the Pro for those long cold sits. Maybe a jacket other than just the chugach also. I dont know if its quite tough enough for an only outer jacket some places I hunt.

I just ordered the same exact top layering system. Looks to be perfect for a wide range of temps. Only thing I'd add is a neck gaiter, and you're set.

The Peloton 97 hoodie with a synthetic t shirt under it shined bright yesterday for a 50# 1 mile pack in to stand hunt, 40 degrees with a stiff north breeze. Not cold and no sweat. Sitka mid weight core bottoms and Kuiu pro pants with the vents open, no sweat/cold down there either.

I have peloton 97 base layer and put axis pants over, that gets me good into the 30’s sitting in a stand. I recently bought some super down pro pants to go over op for glassing/stand hunting for lower temps. They are due to arrive Tuesday so I haven’t hunted with them yet, but I will get some time in them this season before a early November Montana elk hunt next year.
On top I have pro merino 200, strong fleece 260 hoodie, then Sitka jet stream (layers so well in L, L, XL) and that gets me good into the 30’s as well, but plan to add a puffy jacket over like the Sitka WS kelvin, but haven’t pulled the trigger on that yet.
I think with your current plan you are close, but not quite there yet. Active hunting you should be fine, but stand hunting or glassing you will be cold. Just my 2cents.

I love the 240 Peloton as an outer layer. Not sure why folks say it's not durable. Its a very tight weave. I've been thru a lot of brush with mine. No issues. One of the best pieces Kuiu offers
