I want to cash in on their sale and the guide jacket is sold out. What would be the next best thing to a guide jacket? Is the Yukon an "everyday" wearer for Elk hunting? Is it noisy?

What features are you looking for? What made you choose the Guide jacket to begin with?

Guide jacket due to others suggestions. I want an everyday jacket with wind and mild rain proof (not a full rain jacket). Also needs to be tough and quiet so I can hunt with it. I am looking for that everyday Elk hunting jacket

I think the chinook or Teton jacket are most similar to the guide jacket, but no hood. I tried on the Yukon and felt like it was a really heavy rain jacket. There isn't really any insulation just a hard outer shell for beating the harshest elements. I have buddies that love their Yukon jacket but it sounds like you are looking for something different. If you don't care about having a hood then I really like the chinook, if you want a hood I would wait for the guide jacket (I love mine). I haven't seen the Teton jacket yet. The website says its similar to the guide with fewer pockets and no pit zips.

Call customer service, they have always answered my questions and helped me when I am trying to decide between two items.

I have the Guide Jacket and had owned the Kryptek Dalibor II. It's a nice jacket and similar to the guide in many ways. There is a thread on the Dalibor here that I compared them on.

Must be for rifle seasons. Would be too warm to wear a jacket every day for archery season. In the last 10 years I've probably worn a jacket once maybe during archery, and that was closing weekend a few years ago.

This. I have been seeing alot of threads lately of people wanting Kuiu soft shells. Soft shells are dead weight to most on here as they don't insulate as well as puffy's and they aren't waterproof. I have never needed anything except baselayer, midlayer, puffy, and rainwear. That combo will solve basically everything you are looking for...may add a vest in there but softshell? Dont see the need.

Ever since joining here, I've seen a lot of hate on softshells and how they are pointless. I disagree. I think spending $300+ on a rain jacket is pointless. But also, that depends on the environment you are hunting in and your style. A Kuiu guide type jacket that at $180 with layers does the job when you factor in the fact that a puffy + a rain jacket is going to cost you $500-$600. No question a puffy+rain jacket will cover your needs. But so with a guide jacket with layers and $500+ unspent money in your pocket. But, again, It depends on when and where you are hunting, and also your style. I will be hunting during the winter. There is a better chance for snow and not rain. For me, I am just not seeing the point for a rain jacket. I am going to have like a $20 rain poncho in my pack just for emergency purposes. My guide jacket will repel light rain. If it starts to rain heavy, throw on the poncho and relax under a tree until it passes. In that situation, a $20 poncho will perform the same as a $300 rain jacket. But, if you have all the money to buy the whole lineup, then even better. You don't need a message board. You can just take everything out and test them yourself and see what your body likes the best in the various situations. But, for me, sacrificing a rain blocker for a rain repellant + $500 in my pocket is well worth it and the more practical decision for me.

Sounds like a Chinook would fit the bill for you. It checks every box.

If dead set on the guide I'm sure it will show up in the classifieds well before the season opens. If willing to look elsewhere the dalibor II or sitka jetstream will be very close in features. overall I actually like the jetstream better. Main deciding factor was the longer torso length of the guide

I'm not even sure what a "softshell" is. Never heard that term until I started reading these sites, but from what I can gather I've never really used them anyway. But my 800-fill down puffy was $15 on clearance at Costco, and I sold my First Lite rain jacket and still use my $30 Walls 10x rain jacket if needed. So you absolutely don't need to spend $500-$600 on these two pieces. In fact my entire hunting wardrobe with multiples of each for archery and rifle seasons wouldn't cost that.

For winter hunting I have never used a rain jacket in 35 years of hunting. Heck, I rarely use one during archery or the puffy for that matter.

I love my guide jacket but I only wore it once during archery season last year on a cold morning. But during rifle season I wore it everytime we hunted. I think it repels water similar to a rain jacket. Last year we were out in two days of nasty heavy rain and the jacket never got super soaked. So I'm debating whether I need to purchase a good rain jacket.

Take 35 bucks down to the army surplus store and buy an ecws fleece jacket. As breathable and silent as can be, cheap and warm. If you actually need to cut wind put the rain Shell on over top of it. Soft shells are for skiing.

If you're still interested in the Kuiu Guide jacket you might check their stock again.

The Chugach gear that I wanted sold out the day before the Memorial Day sale. Today it's back in stock. :(

I found the Browning Hell's Canyon jacket a few years ago. Has a nice odor killing inner fleece lining and a soft outer shell. Was pretty cheap too but well made. I can see where a lot of folks say not to bother. I do wear it but usually only for a short time in the mornings and at night. I wore fleece as a mid layer and then a puffy vest with this on top. This year I will be wearing a merino sweater mid layer as it just works better. Found it at Goodwill! If I ditched the vest and Browning jacket and just brought a full size puffy it would probably work a bit better but it's what I got and works pretty good.
