I’ve searched this forum and haven’t found a lot so I have a couple questions. Has anyone up here done a drop hunt out of Kodiak? If so what was your gear list like, must haves should haves and should have left behind. Also, did you just go with the transporter’s knowledge for a drop location or pick your own spot and how did you decide? Maybe I’m overthinking it but I’ve looked at the maps and I don’t see much difference except changes as elevation changes. I’m heading out November 5. Thanks for any advice

Don’t rent a bear fence from Kodiak Kamps

Who are you flying with? Your choice of drop locations may likely depend on weather the day you fly in

I have a gear list from early season but November is probably different, you can PM me if you’re interested

bear fence, top quality four season tent. Tent failures is a common and real thing.
It great depends when you are going and when you are going and your experience level

Bring heavy rain gear, like Helly Hansen/Grundens rubber heavy. I've seen the lighweight breatheable stuff get soaked. November could be rain, could be snow, depends on the day. Are you flying in or by boat? Either way, your drop off location will largely depend on where the transporter is comfortable and familiar with. Manage your expectations, wherever you end up, a group probably just hunted there last week. Elevation changes are the most prominent feature that show up on OnX, but deer will primarily be oriented around food and cover. Depending on the weather/mountain that might be anywhere from 1200'-2200'.

We have tent camped on Kodiak about 10 times. Our hunts usually lasted 8-10 days. It can be tricky finding a spot to camp. You need to find a semi level spot above the high tide mark.
Don't even think about it unless you have a high quality tent like an Arctic Oven with a wood stove and a lantern as well as cots to sleep on. You will also need to fly in fireplace logs for the stove as well as fuel.
Expect to get weathered in 50% of the time going in or coming out. Right now we were supposed to fly into Afognak Island on a Elk/deer hunt tomorrow and the outfit we chartered to fly us in called to tell us they cancelled all flights till Thursday due to high winds (50 mph) so we had to reschedule.

Do not, and I repeat, DO NOT tent out for a week on Kodiak without a very high quality tent.
PM me if you want my number to talk about gear or have any questions.
