Kodiak Blacktail Guide

I know most blacktail hunting on Kodiak is DIY/Transporter, but I was wondering if anyone has a good reference for a guided boat based blacktail hunt? I have a buddy that feels more secure when going someplace he has never been using a guide, but I have been unable to find a actual guide for blacktails on Kodiak.

I haven't used Brian for deer, but two thumbs up for the mountain goat hunt I drew in his area.

Your buddy could have a great trip going with a boat transporter or hunting out of one of the lodges that offer "self-guided" blacktail hunts. If he wants to do a fully guided hunt though, there are options.

I know all those guys offer guided deer hunts on the island. There are others though too..... Most are brown bear guides that will do blacktail trips when the bear season winds down, which usually ends up being the best time to hunt the deer (the rut).

I would use Sam Rohrer of Rohrer's bear camp. I've hunted that area many times and they are exceptional.

While not guided, Raspberry Island Remote Lodge is top notch. Warm cabins, great food, and they run you to and from shore on a boat every morning/evening.

I cannot speak to Rick's guide business but can to him as a person. He lived in N. California and back some 25 years ago or more he had an article published in a California hunting magazine (he has killed some dandy bucks). Anways I was able to track down his address and mailed him a letter - AI wasn't invited yet and stamps were a means of communication ( I was newish to hunting and wanted to chat about his successes). He read the letter, called me and invited me up to his house. Awesome down to earth guy and we chatted for a few hours about tricks and tactics for N. California hunting. We kept in touch until he moved to AK and started his business.
