Alright yall…first post on here. Recently purchased the new kimber mountain ascent. My question to you guys is should I mount a pic rail or just go with the rings mounted right onto the receiver? I’m wanting to go with a leupold mark 4 so it’s the clearance I’m worried about. I’m open to other scope suggestions, but leupold is giving me a big discount and I’d like to keep it under 1500. Hunting in AK. Thanks!

Watching. I just picked up a 84M last night. Thinking I want a rail over direct mount as the so I can play musical scopes easier

Direct mount options for Kimber sort of suck. Leupold Backcountry mounts overhang the ejection port and can cause issues, Talleys like to crack. DNZ might be ok.
I'd do a rail and bond it to the action.

I have the same gun in the Mojave version. I bonded a pic rail to the action and am using Hawkins rings on it. I understand getting a discount on the scope, but check out the drop evals here. The leupold’s don’t have a great track record. You can get several different scopes that are more reliable in the $1500 range.

Mine is the Mojave as well in “outdated” .30-06. I like that better than the green alpine color with the ceracote barrel. Did you bond the rail with loctite? How does yours shoot?

Yes I bonded it with loctite 380, you can order it on midway. So far I’m happy with how it shoots. I’ve only tried 2 types of ammo and both shot to the same POI. I’m in CA so I have just shot copper so far but will try some lead ammo before next season. I have a cow elk hunt next week so hopefully I’ll get to see how it does on game.

Email Hawkins about their featherweight rings. Reportedly been in development for some time. I’m patiently waiting. As mentioned the leupolds hang over enough to get in the way loading/unloading. Haven’t ever had a fte related to them. I’d switch to warne bases but I know I’d get the notification from Hawkins a week later.

Not a Kimber but if it's helpful for frame of reference here's my Leupold mk 4 2.5-10 in the Leupold backcountry mediums.

Worth noting the clearance is fairly tight on the zoom wheel so keep that in mind as you're looking at rail thickness and ring height
