Kimber Montana 280 Ackley Improved
5 lbs 6.5 oz on the scale
Titanium bolt handle
This has been my backcountry lightweight hunting rifle the past few seasons. It sits in a climate controlled safe year around. While I have always taken care of it, there are some surface scratches on the stock and barrel from branches and typical hunting and backpacking use. The pictures should reflect such markings but want to be upfront about any imperfections. Great gun but as you can see, it has been utilized as a hunting rifle. The gun has always shot sub 1” MOA and has under 300 shots down the barrel.
I have bedded the recoil lug as I detected a bit of play which did improve the accuracy.
The action is silky smooth but I have had issues as many others have with cycling of the rounds. Therefore, I sent the rifle back to Kimber to have it looked over and it came back clean. I did however at the advice of others replace the magazine spring with a stronger spring (Mauser 98) which has really improved the cycling performance.
I began reloading this past year as the Hornady ELD-X was getting harder and harder to find. It has been a good performer utilizing H4831SC (60.9gr was the best tested), Peterson Brass and 143gr Hammer Hunter Bullets (pictured). Prior to reloading I have exclusively used the Hornady 162gr ELD-X factory ammo which also performed quite well. I have provided remaining factory ammunition I have on stock to provide the new owner with a variety of options.
This should be a great setup for a hard-to-find Montana in 280 AI. I hope the next owner enjoys it as much as I have. Feel free to reach out with any further info or questions.
