I ordered the new Kifaru Woodsman pack and been thinking about how to setup it up for my needs with what I currently have for pockets and accessories. I think I settled on this layout.

  • Guide Lid
  • Medium Pockets on both sides of the bag
  • Nalgene and Mini Pocket on left belt
  • GPS Pouch on Left shoulder Strap
  • Small Pod on Bottom of the Frame
  • Gun Bearer on Right belt/shoulder strap

Might be a stupid new guy question, but how easy is it to remove the pods on the bottom? I assume that would be good for carrying your tarp/tent and sleeping bag? And then could keep all your day hunting gear in the bag?

It's super easy. It's just 4 open ended female buckles.

I got mine ordered up and am going to run a spotting scope pocket on one side for a spotting scope wrapped with rain jacket. On the other side I have a large pocket that I will mount low, leave the lid open to hold the bottom of a tripod. The top of the tripod sticking out will have it's own compression strap so the bag can be compressed without squeezing the tripod. I had a pod for the bottom for a sleeping bag or will strap on a 5string compression sack with my sleeping bag. And, I believe I have thought of a good way to attach a rifle in the middle of the pack, like the picture in the reckoning, using a cradle. Hopefully my plan works but will know for sure when it arrives. Pictures will be posted if it works out.

Let us know how that works out. I am looking hard and long at the reckoning, and have a similar set up in mind (minus the pod). Your Idea with the woodsman has my wheels turning now though too....LOL....add the pod and side pockets to the woodsman.....hmmmmm decisions, decisions....uggg.

Of course. I plan on taking pictures when it arrives. I went back and forth between the Reckoning and the Woodsman. I typically day hunt from the truck or a spike camp and already own the pod and pockets/pouches so I didn't need the extra volume the Reckoning.

Pods will work, but it might be just as easy to put your gear in a dry sack. I have the event dry sacks that let air escape, but keep water out. I bet you could waterproof and strap it to the bottom for less ounces. I agree with the idea, just thought i would through out a different approach.

Will have to try both out. Each way has their pros and cons. I like the ease of use of the pods but I also would like some protection against water.

When your orders shows up, take some pics of the set up. Trying to make some decisions here :)

My email says around Thanksgiving for shipping, so you will have plenty of time to ponder.
I keep looking at pictures and am really thinking my set up is going to work well for me and carrying the rifle in the center of the bag.
