kifaru slick bag old vs new temp rating

I just got back from turkey hunting over the weekend with it being 28-30 degrees F at night. The first night I wanted to test my older 20 degree base bag (slick bag) and was very chilled with just my kryptek merino wool top/bottom and socks on. Then for the rest of the nights I used my older 0 degrees slick bag and slept just fine, but would have been cold if the temp dropped lower.

I know the sleeping ratings can vary with each person, so I'm not complaining about it. I am looking to purchase the newest slick and am having a hard time picking the 20 or 0 degree bag for my high mountain hunt. There are so many different ways this can work out, I could sleep with my Kifaru Lost parka too. Last year it was about 37-40 degree and i used my older 20 degree slick bag with no problem, but slept with my clothes on.

What do you guys think? I guess my question is: Would the newest 20 degree bag actual temp range be about same as the older 0 degree bag?

Older synthetics lose their loft and heat holding.. Aaron said new slick center zips are warmer, they are using apex, which is best synthetic insululation out there.. But if unsure - always go warmer - you can always unzip, vent and go semi-commando.. But if you cold, even with layers - might be tougher to deal with..

I had one of the early 20 deg. slick bags.I dont think I ever spent a night with it below 30 deg.I'm typically a warm sleeper but I was always cold in that thing.I switched to a W.M. down bag ,I've slept in it down to near 0 deg. and always warm and comfortable

old 20* slick bag had 6oz of climasheild combat, a 30* bag my most standards. new 20* I think has 6oz of Climasheild Apex, but I couldn't get anyone at Kifaru to verify this.
My old 20* slick bag was aged enough to be closer to a 40* bag, synthetic will degrade over time so I usually aim pretty high when buying new.

Depending on your size/space needs, going with the wide/long 20* slick bag plus an Apex woobie would be very versatile. The 20* bag would be able to be used more frequently throughout the year (since you wouldn't sweat to death in warmer temps) and if it ever got too cold, you throw in the woobie since you have the extra room from the wide/long and you could easily get to a 0* bag or colder, maybe.

I found the older bags to be pretty close. I slept five nights in my first one where the temp would be in the low teens or single digits every night. Just a base layer and a sea to summit liner and I was comfortable. I've since gone to a wide bag and have added a woobie when it was near or at zero. I have also slept in my super down zip t and guide pants as well when it was dang cold (below zero ) I want to add a pair of down pants and I think I'd be set.

yeah, I found the older 20 degree side zip bag more like a 40 degree bag. The only product from Kifaru that hasn't lived up to its standards. I still have mine, might use if for a summer back country fishing sleeping bag when its super hot. I replaced it with a center zip model, but mine doesn't have the climashield insulation. I bought it between model changes. I haven't used it yet though to confirm if its warmer. I've since bought a Kuiu 0 and 15 degree bags and have been very happy with those. I do like the center zip concept though.

I have the 20* centerzip. I don't know that I would say it is 20* warmer than the old model, but based on what I've heard about the old, I would say the new is at least 10* warmer.

I have slept in mine in all temps above freezing and was impressed that I was never hot. The center zip opens from the bottom and provides ideal venting. During those times I thought there is no way in......heck that this thing will keep me warm below 30. It just seems too flimsy and lightweight.

I never slept a full night below freezing yet. But I have now, several times, used the bag when glassing when temps were well below freezing and wind was extreme. Just sitting in a chair for hours, wearing nothing, and was completely warm. I once got in the bag and laid directly on the concrete and stayed there an hour and stayed warm, although I could feel the cold concrete through the bag.
I'm looking forward to using it in a tent on a pad.

I'm 5'11', 180, and wear a large shirt. I can turn inside the bag but it is tight. Even on my back the bag is JUST right for me. If I was an inch wider in the shoulders I would want a larger bag. FYI.

I'm 5'11'' and about 205 and I first ordered the reglular width, regular length. It was doable but not quite the amount of room I wanted. I exchanged it for the wide/long and it was much more comfortable for me. I hate the claustrophobic feel of mummy bags but the wide/long felt pretty good.

6', 240, with a 36" waist and the reg length, wide width is perfect. Has a little wiggle room in each direction.

Will this bag work for a slide sleeper. I always have a hard time sleeping in my mummy bag because of this.

I'm a side sleeper as well and the Slick bag works perfect for me. Nice part of the center zip is it works with any which way you sleep

Also, the slick bag is huge and definitely not your standard "mummy" bag feel

I have an old 20 degree and I'd say it's 30-35 bag, at least for me. I'm 5' 9", 180 lb and got the regular. It's like sleeping in a straight jacket, I can't stand zipping it up if I don't need to. Are the new models more roomy, in addition to making the ratings a little more realistic?

Also Id refer you to this post on Kifaru. it will give you a good idea of the testing they did on the new model center zip
