I am thinking of selling my Fly Creek UL 2 and going to a Mega tarp.
Do any of you guys use a tarp without a bivy? If you do how is the bug situation?
Would anyone think of using it in Alaska?

I would use it in Alaska (been 3 times for 1-2 week trips so not a complete newb).

I use a bivy with mine just for incidental water and bug peace of mind, providing ground tarp for pad, and keeping pad underneath me with quilt setup (7-8 oz penalty well worth it).

That said, I use the Supertarp, which isn't even as big/luxurious as the Mega.

I do not use a bivy in one, can't say I have ever had an issue with bugs. I did try out quite a few instances last year with a bug net bivy for a particularly buggy area i was hunting, but ended up not needing it.
I have not used it in Alaska, but don't really see a reason not to........I have seen some really nasty mosquito videos on youtube, couldn't tell you where in Alaska they were though.

I've used my supertarp in the cascades, and I didn't have a bug issue. You can easily run a tarp without a bivy if you'd like. That said, you can always get a nest for the inside by bearpaw wilderness designs. I also have one of those, but I don't need it for most trips.
