Been thinking about setting up something for essentials on short treks from camp, the Tailgunner feels like it might be a little too big, but something like the koala? And maybe opt for just a normal belt vs the omni? Anyone tried this? Or other suggestions?

I like my Tailgunner for such short hunts from camp or vehicle.
Holds my kill kit, small lunch, water bottle on hip bet, pistol-holster, In Reach too.
Use straps top & bottom of pack to attach tripod, sitting pad or whatever. I added outside pockets for few extras.
It is not as big as one might think
But if successful, back to camp-vehicle for meat hauling gear

Interesting!
You carry it with shoulder straps or belt?

We used to make a Koala (standard, not lite) waist belt where you could turn a Koala into what ended up being a Tailgunner2. It's been a long time since we made them but you could probably find one if you looked hard enough. The Tailgunner2 and Koala were about the same size if you find one of them and are wondering.

It may be a bit large for your intended use, but I will always have a soft spot in my heart for my Kifaru Scout. A classic lumbar pack that is ideal for a quick walk from camp when you take a bit of gear with you. I frequently use mine for all-day whitetail stillhunts. They are available on the used market quite often. Again, may be too large for your use case, but give the scout a look!

Very cool thanks, will definitely keep my eyes open for this!

Thing is, I already have the X-ray for that. I'm looking to put together something real minimal here. Bare essentials you know :)

Just food for thought on general fanny carry.

Im a trad bow Hunter. I had a large fanny l loved hunting with (mostly short brushy hunts). In a fanny pack l love a design that puffs out as you fill it. Meaning it is cut in a way that inherently folds up clean and could be cinched with bungie or strap. Also l prefer a generic belt because l like the ability to wear it on my left side, but be able to slide it to the back of to the front to dig in it. Wearing a fanny on bow arm side is a really slick complement to a safari tuff style hunting back quiver. It also makes it great to wear a pistol on your strong side if your into that.

Yeah, I've found myself more looking for something less flat and boxy and instead a design that, like you put it, puffs out. That makes it easier to shift from hip to over the shoulder or when not in use just strap to my main pack.
