Family was mostly unsuccessful in drawing rifle tags this year, and the youth opportunities in our area have been cut due to EHD. 12 year old nephew is getting into hunting, but will not have an opportunity to hunt deer with a rifle this year. Thinking about buying him a bow so he can still get out a little and sit in the blind. Minimum poundage in the state is 30 lbs. He is a big kid, i don't think he will have a problem with that. Any suggestions on a decent bow that he can grow with, that is ethical, and (hopefully) doesn't break the bank?

I will say this. I've had terrible luck with highly adjustable bows. When you turn them all the way down to 30# there is little to no string tension. Makes it super easy to torque the string, like crazy easy. They've got like #1-2 holding weight.

I'd recommend getting one that is 30-50 pounds max. Or even better find a used bow that is designed for #40 and turn it down to #35. He'll grow into that quick

Mission Archery line up is the best out there for kids. Lots of adjustment and they will grow with him. Plus they carry the same warranty as the Mathews line. If they’re out of your budget look at Bear. Stay away from the Diamond line. They offer zero ways to tune their bows and quality is hit or miss.

I've got a Hoyt Kobalt I should be able to list in the classifieds soon. I'm just waiting to confirm that my daughter can comfortably shoot her new bow. The Hoyt Kobalt is a really well put together youth bow. It maxes at 45# on it's longest draw length setting. Currently at 24" it maxes around 38.5#.

I've heard Hoyt has discontinued this bow. Though not confirmed. I need to find it in lefty for my son.
