For you long range guys out there, what kestrel do you use and why? I don’t really need the ballistic solution as I use Leica HD-b binos. It would be nice to have density altitude but is the ballistic function worth it? Am I just as well off buying a basic model (2500 etc)

Thanks!

Weatherflow weather meter. About $70 and will give you everything you need. Not specifically density altitude but about anything else you could want or need. Bluetooth connection to a phone app for readout. Shooter will let you import weather data from the weatherflow directly

I just use the Kestrel 2500. The way I do things is with a ballistic program in my phone which costs like $20, or with hard copy charts that are organized by absolute pressure and temperature. With the 2500 I get all I really need, temperature and pressure. The wind call is a help but definitely not the end all for wind, especially in the mountains where the wind could change multiple times over the flight of the bullet. But I do like having the wind reading because its a really good learning tool. I'm definitely not an expert, this is just what has worked for me out to 1000, no further. I can't justify spending the $ on the applied ballistic Kestrel, though it is a neat product.

Actually, the Weatherflow for precision shooting DOES give you density altitude. WEATHERmeter for Precision Shooting – WeatherFlow

I’ll second the recommendation for the Weatherflow - I use it with several ballistic apps on my phone and it’s WAY better than my Kestrel in terms of packability. I’m saving for a Kilo 2400 rangefinder to replace my Kilo 2000 and then I will just use the meter and the range finder for instant firing solutions. <—This is the best solution out there, IMO; and it’s less than a kestrel with the program built in.

4500 as it gives me a few whistles and bells I like.
DA is handy for input on many ballistic apps.

Dang they didn’t have that one a little over a year ago when I ordered mine.
