Kenetrek Mountain Guides?

Hey Guys
There seems to be a new boot from Kenetrek the Mountain Guide??

Does anyone have these/tested them?

We dont get Kenetreks here but I was lucky enough to have a client leave me some of his older Kenetrek Mountain Extremes, and although worn they fit well and insulation is a nice touch as we dont often see insulation hunting boots here. Really impressed how waterproof they are consider the wear/age.

I find them not quite as stiff as I like and the sole has no real edge(they are a bit worn).

The Mountain guides seem to have a different sole and are supposedly stiffer??

Do they run the same sizing(you would think so!)

I received the Mountain Guide Un-insulated about a month ago. They fit the same as my old Hardscrabble hikers. I’ve only put about 10miles on them so far but they are really great. If you’re looking for something stiffer they’ll be perfect. I went with these because of the new sole and we will see about durability. I am still a long ways from the 50 mile break in but I believe I could take them hunting with out a problem. I will continue to break them in and update you. It just sucks cause it’s already 97 degrees in Northern California.

JP100, I was looking for a new boot about three years ago, and the Mountain Guide was one I was looking at, so I don't think they are recently released by Kenetrek. I called Kenetrek back then, trying to decide between the Mountain Guide and the Mountain Extreme. Kenetrek CS told me the Mountain Guide is stiffer than the Mountain Extreme, especially in the mid-sole which their catalogue describes as "extra stiff and fully crampon compatible". I ended up going with the Mountain Extremes.
I think the Mountain Guides are designed for heavy use, and like other Kenetreks, if you get a good fit, and break them in, they should be a durable long-lasting boot. Your Mountain Extremes are going to last a while, but you can get them resoled (rebuilt) by Kenetrek when the time comes.
Let us know how you like them after wearing them a while. If you want a stiffer boot than the Mountain Extremes, the Mountain Guide will probably be what you are looking for.

Thanks for that, I do live in NZ so we are about 5 years behind the USA haha. They are new to me anyways.

The Mountain extremes are not quite extreme enough haha, just finished a week of winter Tahr hunting and they are definitely not suited to what I do, no edge on the sole and way to much flex for steep country.
Might have a look at the Mountain extremes, but its a hassle to buy boots online when you cant see them in person.

If the extremes fit your foot great l feel the Mountain Guides are exactly what you’re looking for. I’ve been wearing mine around on small hikes and everything is going great. No hot spots whatsoever. If you do purchase a pair I recommend getting some of Kenetreks waterproofing wax while you’re at it. The Mountain Guides have been out for a few years but they changed the sole for 2018. So far I’m impressed. They seem to grip really well and are supposed to be more durable.

Any updates from Steven C or anybody else on the comparison between the Mountain Extreme and Mountain Guide?

I have only put 25 miles on them so far. I haven’t had any problems. I think they are great. I do like the sole better. I have pretty bad nerve damage in both of my feet due to injuries. It’s kind of complicated. I can’t wear tennis shoes or sandals at all. I can’t walk barefoot off of the carpet. My hardscrabbles were the first boot that I could wear all day in the mountains without pain. These are even better. I haven’t tried the extremes but I really like the guides so far. I’m 6’7” and 285 lbs so maybe they feel not so stiff to me. Someone 5’8” and 165 lbs might seem too stiff. Overall I would buy them again and I’m debating on getting the 400 gram just because I’m a gear nut. Let me know if you have any specific questions. I’ll try to help.

They fit exactly the same as my hardscrabble’s. I’ve used those for 10 years. Had them rebuilt twice. I wear a 14 in Merrill, Wesco, and White’s , also in Schnees pac boot. I run the Green super feet insoles in both.

What’s the difference between the 2018 mtn guide and the previous? Is it just the sole? I see the older model on sale in Canada for $400 right now.
Love my mtn extremes, but if I’m going for sheep...

Hank, from what I have read, it is just the sole. A little stiffer, and the tread pattern.

No rand on the guide. That kinda pushed me that way. Just don’t have to worry about it.
