KDF muzzle brake? Thin sporter barrel

Thinking about putting a brake on my .338 wm. I’m tinkering with it to set it up shooting the 230 eld-x.

It has a factory sporter barrel that’s definitely on the thin side. I’m trying to keep it as a lighter weight gun, rather than rebarrel to a heavier barrel.

I’m sending the barreled action to a smith that has a good reputation working on Winchester’s for a trigger job. Tried a new spring but it’s still breaking around 4.5 lbs, and I want it at 2.

I mentioned maybe braking it and he carries KDF brakes. He said he’ll look at the barrel profile and see if they’ll work.

That being said, is the KDF any good or is it an old school design that’s not as good as newer designs? I’m definitely looking for a lightweight brake option and prefer a slimmer profile. Maybe even one that I can take off for hunting. I’ve never been a big fan of how loud brakes are, but I do appreciate making this gun more enjoyable to shoot.

Anyone have any thoughts on KDF or options for a sporter barrel? Thanks.

My old man has a 300 RUM with a muzzle brake very similar to the design of the KDF brakes (It may actually be a KDF?) but its installed on a fluted bull barrel. For comparison I have a 300 RUM with a sporter barrel and ran into the same problem as you. There was not a lot of meat left for threading and as a result, the selection of brakes is limited. I ended up with a Micro Bastard (stupid name for a brake in my opinion). When shooting these rifles side by side, the felt reduction in recoil is nearly identical even though the brake on the sporter barrel is inherently smaller. The micro bastard is definitely lightweight/ slim line and I prefer it over my dads because there are not any downward vents to project muzzle blast towards the ground. Not sure if that helps you.

Nothing wrong with a KDF, theyre an effective brake. If you shoot prone much, you'd be better off with an indexed brake with out bottom ports.
