Buy the Katabatic if you want, but don't act like they're the only one with stretchy material on the back. Just make sure you like the ONE color they offer in each model.

Well pal, do elaborate on what you mean. Again, I stated from the beginning I have not used the quilt; however, my testing of similar products allow me to make educated opinions based on prior experiences. Lets not make this more than it is. If you are educated on down, fabrics, stitching, baffle construction, and geometry of space it really doesn't take a rocket scientist to narrow down which products are the best. Typically the best products are not the lightest which is why most people need to experience this as I have.

For me the Nunatak attachment system and lack of stretch around you on the bottom is inferior to the Katabatic. However, I do agree with you that the Nunatak is on par with the best of the best.

I'm not trying to get in an argument. I'm not not knocking you for your opinion either. But you made 2 very defining statements...

1) you've never used a quilt.
2) Katabatic is the best by far.

You failed when you made that 2nd statement. You left zero room for ambiguity.

If you'd told me you had used 3 or 4 of the top quilt manufacturers and then made that 2nd statement, about the ones you owned. Done. There is credibility there.

Heck, even if you'd made the first statement, rattled off your research and reasoning, and didn't end with such a definitive final statement, I'd buy into your thought process.

While I do appreciate the honesty that you hadn't used the quilts before. I'm just suggesting that there are better ways to give your opinions without setting off others who have actually used the products.

I'm clearly not the only one with that opinion.

For what it's worth I've used a bunch of quilts. They arent mummy bags. If that's what you're after, buy a mummy bag. I personally dont like the elasticated edges, though to be fair, I havent used a Katabatic quilt so maybe their system is finished in such a way that makes it superior. I would also say that in my experience that the way Nunatak orients and sizes their baffles is superior to Katabatic. The amount of fill they use is higher (in the quilts I've compared). Nunatak can be customized, which is important for me as i need/want a bigger foot box then others.

I still may order a Katabatic at some point, even though I dont think it's the best, it is still a really good quilt.

Tdot,

Thank you for your detailed explanation as I do not want to argue either. I went back and re-read my post and agree with you my last statement is an overreach. I actually hate when others us the "Best" statement and I ended up doing it haha. Can you say foot in mouth!

Truth be told I test a lot of gear packs, stoves, boots, tents etc. and have become pretty educated on what goes into products. Unfortunately, I allowed myself to make some opinions and statements on quilts that would have been better kept to myself until I used said product.

I actually appreciate your constructive criticism as I want my opinions and views to matter on this forum. I have thick skin and don't mind taking some blow back from time to time, but also will admit when something doesn't align.

Btw, this string of posts may have actually kept me from trying a quilt and sticking with a Western Mountaineering or Feathered Friends wide sleeping bag.

Happy hunting and good luck this season.

Adam
