Well I woke up this morning, but it still feels like I am dreaming. I just drew my first and possibly only sheep tag!!! I don't think I will ever have the budget for an out of state sheep hunt. So I am going to put everything I have into being successful this fall.

It is a first rifle S11 tag, I plan on scouting every bit of free time I have this summer. I am a new father, my son turns 1 in august. So free time is more precious than gold at the moment. Any help from those who have hunted S11 for sheep in the past would be greatly appreciated. I would be more than happy to buy you dinner, meet up for beers. I have already started looking at stats from cpw. But any one out there who has hunted sheep in S11 I would really love to pick your brain.

Thanks & Good luck to everyone this season!

Congrats! Mark your calendar on June 21 for the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society Sheep and Goat Hunter Meet & Greet. in Golden, Colo. Registration open at: https://www.bighornsheep.org/meet-greet/

We will have dozens of experienced Colo sheep a goat hunters on hand to provide unit specific info to help you hit the ground running with your scouting and hunt planning.
Last year we had over 200 folks on hand for an incredible half day of hunters helping hunters!

We also will have 500+ sheep and goat hunters, guides and enthusiasts at our May 17th RMBS Rendezvous coming up in Loveland.

Both RMBS Meet & Greet June 21 and Rendezvous on May 17 are great time investments for newly minted sheep and goat tag holders to learn from folks who have been in the game for a long time.

I'll be climbing 14ers in that area and may have some intel for you.

I love a FNG unit bash as much as the next WKR but to be fair I often put in for sheep hunts with no knowledge of the unit and just see better odds or more rugged country and hope less guys sitting on max don’t want to hump in that country.

Second this.

Not trying to bash. Here in Alberta no one is giving you ANY help on Sheep. I would not dream of applying anywhere I had no knowledge of. Was genuinely curious, do people share vital info more because it is "once in a lifetime"? I shot a Ram here two years ago and no one in my immediate family even knows where. Have told no one even what zone.

I think that’s generally the sentiment, OIL tags get a lot more help. Where as here in the US the opposite would be said for our unlimiteds

With OIL tags generally people down here are much more willing to share
As for applying in units I have no knowledge beforehand? If that was the case most of us would not be applying in 3-8 states for 20-30tags a year. 90% of my apps are for units I physically have not been to that’s just the reality

I also drew CO ram tag this year in southern CO. Never been to that unit - my app strategy was strictly on combination of draw odds(if you can call it that at 0.5% vs 1.5% for example, but it is 3x) , harvest rates, physically demanding hunt etc.
now that I have the tag I’m starting to talk to people and people are happy to share being OIL tag. I’ll get out and scout few times this summer as well.
But not even telling your family about where you shot your ram? What’s the reason?

"Loose lips sink ships". Over the counter tags and lots of hunting pressure. Not all areas are as well known but all areas are known. Just don't want to have dozens of guys in my favorite drainages. Just a very private guy and even more so with Sheep info.

For OTC tags I 100% agree and would not be sharing info openly. But for true OIL tags if I can help someone out because I have prior experience or get help I’m happy to help.
I didn’t think you guys had OTC in Alberta??

You definitely have a different system in Alberta than CO when it comes to sheep, however ask a Coloradan about his elk hunting spot and watch out.

Back to sheep though. Drawing a tag here is so monumental that most people will give you every secret they have. As stated about the Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society actually has an event that brings current and past tag holders together to share information and make this year's hunters as successful as possible. Then next year those hunters will come back and pass what they were taught and what they learned to the next hunter and on and on it goes.

I could not imagine an OTC sheep hunt here. Talk about having people at each others throats...yikes.

Yeah we still do. There are three or four draw only zones as well. Ewes are on draw only. If you are successful and kill a Ram you have to wait one year before being able to again hunt.

Most states sheep kill data, is open for research, as in they log kill site and under public records act it’s accessible to general public.

biggest “thought” issue is how it may increase applications for certain units, example a 190” ram is killed in xyz and posted on public forum, it may increase applications to that unit, except Most states publish size and age data, as does most magazines, so it’s a little over bearing for people to whine about OIL tags units
