I’m considering buying a used (2012 model, 2800 hours) John Deere XUV 550 S4 to haul people, tools, and feed around my farm. The terrain isn’t anything too difficult…typical Ozarks rolling hills, a bit rocky in places, a couple wet weather creeks to cross.

For more context, my current utility vehicle is a Honda Pioneer 500 that has been on long term loan from my dad. He’s about to have need of the Honda back at his place, so I’m looking for a replacement. We fought an intermittent fuel pump issue on the Honda for a while, but after we figured out the root cause (faulty ECM), it has run like a Swiss watch. My only complaints about the Honda are that the middle of the bench seat gets hot enough to fry an egg in the summertime and that the cab is getting crowded because my passenger load is growing. My 6, 4, and 2 year old often accompany me, and it won’t be long before the baby joins us. For that reason, the second row of seating on this John Deere is very appealing.

Anyone have thoughts on this particular machine? Anything in particular I should check out when I test drive it?
