Jim Green Rangers

Love the Jim Green rangers. They are quiet and durable. They are not what I’d consider lightweight, breathable or ideal in wet conditions. If you have wide feet like me, you will appreciate the toe box.

I'll throw in a recommendation for the JG Barefoot Razorback. Sole is going to be just like the Ranger, so the same likes/dislikes there. I really like the padded ankles in the Razorback when lacing tight over the ankle (loose over foot).
Do you have the barefoot razorback? I have the moc toe, ranger, and trooper. Really like them all and was considering the razorback for a warm weather work and hunt boot.

I've got three pairs of Jim Green boots all in the barefoot version. The moc toe, ranger, and trooper. They are really great boots. I wear them for work as a forester and as my hunting boots. I live in the mountains and the perform well. I do agree the soles are not great. When its wet and steep I really struggle due to the low traction, however, they are very light and that makes it so I can walk longer distances without fatiguing. They are very durable. They aren't waterproof. That being said, I still pick these over my other gortex boots except if its a torrential downpour. Gortex or other waterproof boots just make my feet sweat so bad they get wet unless it's very cold outside. I wax them up a few times each year, and throughout the hunting season. It helps keep them water resistant longer. I like them very much, and my complaint is the sole kinda sucks a little bit.

They have a decent range of outsole options for custom orders using the JG last:

Unfortunately few (none with lugs) for the Barefoot last

and just one option using the Anatomical Barefoot last:

I still think JG might be sympathetic to our needs if we ask but they really need a grippy barefoot sole.

My local cobbler said that due to width of these shoes that sometimes an upsize is needed on the outsole, as many are just not designed for that wide of a boot.

Either way, I’m hoping that problem is behind me once my nicks show up.

Looks like a vibram ketterlift copycat, which is the perfect outsole for a barefoot boot imo.

Jim greens actually feel more barefooty with a new outsole as well. That rose anvil is fairly thick, and pretty heavy.
I’ve always wondered why they don’t just strip off the foam and use that sole for the barefoot boot. Seems like a dumb decision and such a simple solution to their crappy soles.
