Jeep check engine light help

I am in need of some help. I have a 2012 Jeep Liberty. The check engine light came on and says "gas cap" on the dash. Took it to O'Reilly and codes 456 and 457 are what came up (they are evap leak codes) I bought a gas cap from dealership, had the codes cleared. Came right back on with the same codes. Called nearest dealership 75miles away. Made an appointment, drove it up there and they turned me away with an "oops, the gas tank is at 3/4 and we forgot to tell you it needed to be under 1/4 for them to do a smoke test to find the evap leak. Took it back up this last Saturday and they did the test and told me it needs an evap canister and esim. They wanted over $500 to do it and would have to order parts and set up another appointment. So I just ordered one at O'Reilly. Put it on the evening and codes came right back on. Took it to O'Reilly, had codes cleared. Came right back on. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Rusty

Try disconnecting your battery for a few minutes and then rehooking it up. SOMETIMES that will clear up a faulty failure light.

You still have part of your evap system that isn’t working. Could be a canister or some sort of sensor. Check the Jeep Forums and you should be able to find your answer

I always remove a battery lead to clear the codes out. I have a Wrangler though and can read the codes directly on my odometer so it could be different than your vehicle. That said my Jeep has been showing emission sensor and a couple other codes for over a decade now, have never fixed any of them and it still passes emissions tests with flying colors.

Im a former mechanic and worked in multiple shops including a Honda shop for 13 years.
( ASE master tech/ Honda master tech) Evap leaks can be one of the hardest faults to diagnose and a lot of seasoned technicians do not understand the the complete system and just throw on a part that “fixed” another car or a part that is easy to replace. There’s a lot of sensors, tubes, pipes, hoses, valves, solenoids and computers that control it all and yet I feel the most common problems for me was spider webs in vents, or rodents chewing wiring or hoses. Good luck with the repair. There’s a troubleshooting flow chart for the system. it’s just a matter if the technician wants to spend the time with proper diagnostic or orders a part and gets on to the next job.

Depending on what state and how many miles it might be covered under emissions warranty. Some go past 10 years or 100k miles.

I've got a 25 year old truck with about 200k on it. The CEL has been on maybe 5 times. All easy fixes, with the last being a shot catalytic converter. But, that is pure luck (well, not pure, it isn't a Jeep). As noted, once the obvious has been checked, it's a bear to find some issues and that means Benjamins out your pocket. IF you've gotten your money's worth from it, drive it till it dies, which it will. Then part it out on Ebay.

I've never had this problem but I'm a long time jeep builder (have a wk myself) and I've heard of this.
It's very uncommon for the evap canister to "go bad", they're made to last the life of the vehicle or at a min 10+ years.
May not be the solution but I've read where several people solved this by replacing the gas cap. Something about the rubber seal leaking IIRC. Goodluck!

Heres my wk, just got finished rebuilding the 5.7 hemi. Bored & stroked to a 392 with custom headers.

Thanks guys. I will see what I come up with next. I know it may not hurt to have the code on, but I would really like to get it all cleared

The CEL does exist for a reason, though we'd like to hope it doesn't really mean anything. On any vehicle I know of, it's linked to an emissions related issue. Ignored long enough, it will do some degree of damage to the vehicle. The question is whether the vehicle has enough value to you to spend the money to find and fix the problem. If not, run it till it dies and part it out.
