I've always heard Solomons are soft. They're too narrow for me to get my for into, so I don't know for sure.
Oof. The Salomon is a "soft" boot?

My work boots must be tennis shoes then. I'd hate to see what a stiff boot is.

Yes, for mountain boots the quest 4d is flexible boot. Lowa tibet, kennetrek mountain extreme, zamberlan 980, etc type boots are much stiffer.

I've got sissy feet/ankles and much prefer the support of stiffer boots in most mountain hunting situations. Others who obviously have much stronger feet/ankles often prefer softer boots. The stiffer they are the more critical they seem to be of fit.

Apparently, my ankles are pretty solid the Salomons annoyed me a little at first because they were stiffer than what I'm used to walking on. Add to that walking on harder, smoother surfaces during initial break in and I guess I built the idea that they were stiffer.

I typically wind up not buying a boot because it's the "right" boot, but because it's the only one I can find that I can shove my hoof of a foot into. I'm going to TRY to find a boot based more on features and quality rather than just taking what fits and doesn't crush my toes this time.

Lathrop has "super wide"; I've never tried them on

I've had Hoffman Explorer wide, and they aren't that wide. Any of the Meindl comfort fit in wide are significantly wider, drastically.

They are definitely more supportive than the typical leather boot us easterners are exposed to. Compared to something like a danner pronghorn or the rocky boots i grew up with, they are a notably different feel for sure.
