Dad and I are rolling out Friday morning for our first ever elk hunt! 10 years of talking about it, and then about 1 year's worth of researching, planning and training all come to a head at the end of this week! Our drive is about 24 hours non-stop. I figure with stops/quick naps and time change, we should arrive at our destination around noon-2pm Saturday. That will give us plenty of time to locate our camp site, get set-up and relax a little before we hit it hard Sunday morning. The rokslide community has been invaluable in helping plan this hunt. This website is such a treasure trove of information. Hopefully, as I gain experience, I can begin to help others on here. When I return I plan to plaster the board full of pictures of the huge elk Dad and I shot! Realistically, I know that are chances of doing that are slim, but I can dream. Regardless of harvest or not, I know we will have a phenomenal trip.

If any of you guys are hunting around Clark and you run into two NC boys sucking wind at the top of the mountain, take pity on us and don't laugh too hard!

Good hunting ! Remember that the success rate is around 20% but it's about the hunt and experience. I hope you cut your tags but the first time you hear elk bugle or even talk is way cool ! First time you smell elk or hear them stomping branches. Have elk around camp bark at you in the dark. Then there's just being in the mountains in the fall. Let go any pressure you feel to cut a tag and just have fun and be ready !

That's way too long to be talking about it. Now, go get that elk. As was said...........enjoy the hunt no matter the outcome.

Good luck, just got back from my first hunt. We did the same thing and pushed straight through from sea level. The altitude wasn't as bad as I thought and we were camped at 10,500. We didn't stick one, but saw several up close, all in the steep dark timber. And they aren't lying about smelling them, it smells like a petting zoo, impossible to miss.

I'm all packed and ready to roll. Did some last minute equipment checks, shot the bow a few more times because the previous 5,000 shots just weren't enough! Hopefully I can get some sleep tonight so I will well rested for the long drive, but I doubt I will. Been a while since I've been this fired up.

A few more hours to go. Couldn't keep my eyes open by 4am so we pulled off and slept for a couple hours. Rather get there a little later than expected than never get there at all.

Well, got 4 days of hunting in and it's been an adventure to say the least! Tomorrow will be our last day, got to cut the trip short by a couple days, my mom had an accident at work. She's ok, just a sprain and some bruises but dad needs to get home to take care of her. I will give all details of the hunt when I get back!
