Out of curiosity, what would the pros and cons be of greatly reducing the forend length for a shorter barreled (16" - 20") rifle?

I've been mounting my bipods and tripods (Spartans) as far rear as possible to get them right at the balance point. Now I'm wondering why I have 4-6" of extra forend on a regularly stocked rifle.

I rarely free hand shots. But if I do, I never stick my hand at the end of the forend. I always get it right in front of the mag and tuck my elbow into my side or on top of my bino harness.

Just bouncing ideas off Rokslide trying to make a lighter backpacking rifle.
