Is this how we ultimately are able to manage the feral burros?

lol, a study. Anyone with half a brain can see what wild horses and burros do to the landscape.
Yes, on the face of it it’s silly but you can’t combat the problem with the anti’s without facts.

When the anti’s tried to shut down lion hunting in the courts AZGFD had to collect data to support the continued hunting of them. Hence we have the harvest quota but we can still hunt them.

It was the same fight with the bison in the park. The anti’s fought like crazy to not kill them even though the destruction was obvious. The Feds made a debacle out of the hunt so there’s that. I haven’t followed to see if any progress was made there.

AZGFD looks to be taking a step towards combating the feral burro problem by bringing scientific study to the table. Might be a long haul but maybe it’ll go somewhere.

Thoughts?

I think that approach has a better chance.

We have to realize that the vast majority of Americans are going to care more about being in AZ and looking out over a valley of Saguaro cactus or whatever other veg than they care about mule deer, antelope or some other game animal.

I don't see how a study will help. Everyone knows what the problem is. Unless congress repeals or changes the Wild and Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 nothing will change. They are regulated by the feds.

In the early 1950's feral horses and burros were not controlled by the feds. My Dad and some of his friends went out to the Mojave desert and shot a few burros. They bought the meat home and we tried to eat it. I remember my mom cooking it and it smelled pretty bad and tasted even worse. We fed the rest to Dad's hounds.
They are a real problem, especial the water sources. They foul them and not much else will use them.

Happily Texas continues to classify them as livestock, unlike the green wiener states, they usually get donated to a big cat refuge for consumption by the confiscated animals
Or buzzards and coyotes get their share
Feral animals are not welcome here

I wonder why they tasted poor. Maybe Mom's cooking was not the best. An acquaintance of mine ate horse overseas several times and said it tasted fine, much like beef/venison. (Maybe it is a cultural thing: can't shoot a zebra because they live in a zoo in the USA, yet people go to Africa to hunt them. Can't eat a horse because it is a pet in the USA, yet people in foreign country eat them regularly.)
