Is poaching truly this prevalent?

More trophy class animals are poached than killed fair chase.
People are just lazy.

We just signed a Felony indictment on a guy for poaching last fall with his wife.
He had a brand new gun…..
The Felony was that he wasn’t supposed to even own the gun… he was a felon.

One guy I turned in for shooting 2 cow elk was a neighbor, I knew he was a felon. He had a rifle in his hands while I confronted him, he proclaimed that he had shot one for himself and one for his dad. His dad was out of state, the property he shot them on was known to not allow any hunting.
He was charged with felon in possession, hunting on private property without permission, and illegal take of an elk. His dad was also charge for giving him the tag.

Just general observation of people in everyday life now and there seems to be an attitude of doing what you want when you want, The rules don’t apply. Walking on the dont walk signal, driving through red lights, crossing on double yellow lines going 70mph. Why would it be any different in others areas of life? The breakdown of civility is real.

I caught a guy trespassing during deer season a few years back, on property where I manage the hunting. He had a rifle slung over his shoulder, as did his girlfriend who was trespassing with him. He had a radio on his pack strap that he was using to communicate with his son who was further up the mountain, also trespassing to hunt. He was the son of a neighbor poacher that I butted heads with often and they all knew very well they were not welcome on the property.
Decided they had stepped too far over the line and the CPO was called. Told him we didn’t want to press charges this time for trespassing because the warden had bigger issues to handle, but we wanted it on record and would press charges the next time.
Warden called back three days later and asked if I would testify in court. Turns out the man was a violent felon and had only been out of prison for a few months. They charged him with felon in possession of firearm, trespassing to hunt, contributing to delinquency for taking a minor to trespass to hunt, and a parole violation.
I showed up for court three times and the warden had a solid case. The judge accepted a plea deal and he was convicted of misdemeanor possession of ammunition.

The social acceptance and judicial disregard is frustrating.

“[Insert whatever you want] isn’t illegal on stolen land.”

That’s where we’re heading.

When you start adding BS arbitrary, subjective and vague laws and rules for the primary purpose of generating revenue for the state, the natural human response is "screw it all" in regards to the laws.

That doesn't mean the next step is to do whatever you want.

Good Lord that's a long way to drop the charges to from where he started.

No big surprise. Our criminal justice system doesn’t do anything to keep bad people off the streets.

I recently had a multiple time convicted felon in possession of a firearm, now working as a delivery driver, spend 10 minutes in my garage at 6pm in the evening with no package to deliver at my house. He proceeded to drop a package at my neighbors place, enter an unlocked office door adjacent to his garage and steal a liquor bottle. Cops caught him and charged him with two felony conspiracy to commit burglary and one petit larceny.

Prosecutor dropped the felonies, giving him time served. He’ll be back out soon. The offender is in his early 20’s with a rap sheet longer than my arm.

The hate we have for each other on the internet is starting to show up here too. We have someone poaching big mule deer bucks but only on closed private land. All shot and left to rot. "If I cant hunt neither can you". Most people suck. Change my mind.

I can't poach because I would like to display pictures if I get a great trophy!
That sure doesn't seem to stop a lot of guys. It's amazing how many poaching investigations start and end with facebook posts, youtube footage, even TV shows. Some people will knowingly self-incriminate because they just can't help themselves. The glory and bragging rights are a big part of the motivation.

Yep. Picked up my kid from school yesterday and a lady was parked on the red fire 'do not park' line. I threw out my arm in a 'what are you doing idiot' gesture, and she flipped me off.

I've heard people admit they're "a man" and "a man" don't buy no piece of paper that lets him kill an animal. He's got a right to kill that animal. People like that always get a nod and a "Oh yeah definitely" from me. Can't tell someone like that anything but what they want to hear

Didn’t read all the replies in here but had something to add to yours.

I was stationed in Savannah for a hot minute. Did a lot of hunting on Fort Stewart and HAAF. What blew my mind about Georgia was the paper license. I recorded my deer on said paper license, but if I lost it I could just print out another paper license with blank tag slots and start over.

Hunted with a group of guys on some private land for a few years. Come to find out, one of them was doing just that. He would fill his tags, if I remember right it was 10 doe and 2 bucks, then go print a new license. He would “back date” a few entries and continue hunting. Once word got out that he was doing that, he was no longer invited to hunt with that group.

Not surprised. At all.
