Is my PRC slow?

Have a bergara b14 wilderness ridge 24” that I’ve been working loads for. H1000 Berger 156s, Hornady brass, cci Lrp hitting pressure at 57 gr. 56 gr shoots just over half min groups at 100, but does so at only 2814fps. Do I just have a tight chamber? Barrel has over 200 down it so I’m not expecting a “speed up”

That seems pretty close to right with H1000. Maybe 50FPS off. But that’s nothing from barrel to barrel. I’ve personally had 4 6.5 PRC’s and loaded for quite a few more. A lot of speeds that are posted on the web are absolutely in pressure. Don’t put much weight into what other people are getting.

You can use a different powder to get more speed if you want. But I think you’re close with H1000.

I have a 140 elite hunter I worked up and sat right around 2940.
I’ve loaded 140’s in multiple 24” barrels with multiple powders. They sit around 2940fps with the cooler burning powders H4831SC and H1000. Even 565 doesn’t really send them screaming. They CAN absolutely go faster. There’s powders that will do it, and accompanied by a little bolt click, they can shoot plenty fast.

If you have those 156’s going 2800 and shooting good with H1000 (my favorite powder) I wouldn’t sweat it one bit. They’re a great bullet and they’ll kill well at that speed out to a long ways.

Food for thought. How far do you plan to shoot that a 156 Berger at 2800 isn’t fast enough?
Oh I am 100% agreeing with you there. I understand that in reality 500 is my max and 2800 is PLENTY to get there. Just was curious why I’m not seeing similar speeds others are getting

My rifle has a 22" barrel. I'm using 57.3grs. of N568 with the 156's. and Gunwerks brass. Getting about 2800. It gets about .9" for 10 at 100 yards. If I increase the charge, the groups open up. Overall, pretty happy with it. Yours might be a little bit slow for a 24", but it were me, I wouldn't worry and just roll with it.

H1000 is a single based powder and don’t get highest velocities with it. However top notch for accuracy and consitency. Double based powders like rl26, other Alliant powdere, and several of the ramshot will give better velocities. The nice thing about the high BC is don’t need the highest starting velocities. I run h1000 with 170s in my sons fast twist 270 wsm. Could get another 100+ fps but very accurate and don’t need more oomph

I think you’re right where you should be, my load of 140s and H1000 out of a 22 inch barrel runs at 2950 with 58 gr. I found pressure not far from that.

There is a couple Hornady podcast about the cartridge being a 2850-3000 FPS depending on a lot of factors. But it is supposed to be right sized, where the 28 Nosler is meant to kill a barrel in 600-800 rounds.

I think I’d have a better chance finding a winning lottery ticket
Try N565, it yielded better speeds and precision (.6" 10 shot group @ 100) than H1000 for me. I'm right at 2930 with a 143 and Rem 9 1/2 in a 21.5" barrel suppressed.
