I've been hunting elk over 37 years. Hardcore bow hunter. But also do a week in 2nd rifle season. I've called in elk quite a few times during 2nd rifle season, so I always carry mine. I also like to sound a bugle early in the morning before sunrise as a locater bugle.
Don’t leave home without them you can get elk to respond or come in silent I bugled this bull out of his bed the third week of October and have killed several who were chasing cows and screaming in the second or third estrus
One of the most epic days I ever had in the elk woods was my daughter's early Oct muzzleloader hunt. She killed a 5x5 at 2:00 P.M. on opening day. It was the 6th bull that I called to within 100 yards that day. The bulls were screaming all over and responding readily to cow calls. It was October 5th I believe.
If you hunt NM in October, I'd absolutely recommend calling. I've accompanied a guy on several muzzy hunts and we've called bulls in to meet their maker each time. The action has been unbelievable on each hunt. I've considered applying for muzzy and hunting with my bow.
I also shot a herd bull on October 16th last year. It was the latest I ever elk hunted. He was bugling along with 3-4 other bulls in a couple herds that all merged into one. It was an awesome day. I only bugled enough to get him going and then let them do the rest of the work calling wise. Getting to them on time was a race!
I have heard some bugling in October, but not a lot. Like cnelk, I would carry a cow call, but not bugle. I have had a lot of bow hunters come stalking me in September. I would hate to have a guy with a 30-06 searching for me, especially through his rifle scope. You can consider me a little paranoid I guess.
I have used a locator bugle during CO's second season with good luck. Busted a herd during the same season and cow called the herd back to me. I will never leave my bugle tube or cow calls at home during any season.
I’ve had bulls in full out rut on October 25 and 26 in Montana. A huge herd on a ranch suddenly started moving with bulls herding cows up and screaming at each other. A herd of 140-150 broke up into small groups with a bull each. I didn’t have a call and really wouldn’t have known how to use it if I did but I could probably have shot a bull on the 25th if I had been ready. He was on the far side of a large group of cows just out of sight over a small rise. If I could have turned him and just got him to come to the top of that rise I could have had a shot. All night I could hear the herds moving off in different directions the bulls screaming at each other. I shot a bull the next day out of a smaller herd so it worked out. It was amazing and I didn’t hear a peep after noon the next day. I’m guessing one cow came into heat in the big herd and everything went crazy instantly. Point is carry a call and know how to bugle. A mouth diaphragm call weighs next to nothing so have both a bugle and cow call in your pocket.
It takes alot of confidence to carry a bugle tube, and know how and when to use it whether October, September or August. The guys who won't use it are limiting themselves, or just not very confident with one. Even though they may very well be great elk hunters. The point being, if you are a beginning elk Hunter, don't put limitations on yourself just because others put limitations on themselves, or say something won't work.
If I'd of let others put limitations on me? I'd still be looking for that first elk in my freezer. And besides, I love it when someone says something doesn't work because they can't or haven't done it. I love proving the "I can't" guys wrong. Then again, I have a "can do" mindset
Heck yes!!
This year in my hunting area, as October rifle season was opening, a herd bull was bugling like crazy in his group. He was killed opening morning. That was either 2nd or 3rd week of October. You can go in light with calls and maybe come out heavy! If only he has been doing that during archery season.
