Is gen 2 PST FFP overkill for hunting?

New member here. Trying to decide which optic to put on a Browning X-bolt Hells Canyon Long Range in7mm rem mag. Have it narrowed down between Vortex Viper PST gen 2 3-15 x 44 FFP and Leupold VX-5HD 3-15 x 44. Will be primarily used for hunting midwest whitetail, but would like to be able to take it elk/antelope hunting out west in the next year. Some of the reviews that I've read say the vortex is more suited for precision long range shooting from a bench. The Leupold is significantly lighter also. Just wondering if the vortex is overkill for my use. Is the first focal plane necessary when I'm using a laser rangefinder anyway? Any thoughts?

FFP vs SFP is really a personal choice. I prefer SFP for hunting but see the usefulness of FFP in certain situations.

The SFP vs FFP debates never really end and the next person to reply will probably preach FFP or the scope is worthless lol. Personal choice, doesn’t affect me either way.

Of those two I would probably go leupold. Capped windage and a more compact elevation turret is nice on a hunting rifle imo, and the weight difference is pretty substantial between those two.

Would make a solid choice,
FFP simplifies the use of wind holds at any magnification.
Wind seems to be fairly common in hunting environs.

I just put one on my muzzle loader and have a couple AMG s oon others.
I fight with myself at times with ffp or sfp. But in most cases ffp

IMO the wind hold thing is a little “overblown” for most hunting situations. At 500 yards in a 10 mph full value wind my primary hunting rifle is drifting 1.4 Moa or 7.3”. Now I can guess 7” looking thru a scope at an animal pretty well. Probably +-2” which to me is close enough. At 500 I’m probably going to be on max power anyway if I did want to reference my reticle. At a range where I possible would want a lower power, let’s say 300 yards, even in a 20 mph wind I have 5” of drift which is easily guessable.

I have nothing against FFP, shot them plenty, just haven’t been in a hunting situation where I really though one would have made a difference in accuracy.
