Iphone Messaging w/ Satellites in the Backcountry

Am I better off getting a Garmin 67i? I don’t want to rely on my phone for navigation or comms. I spend to much time on it as it is. Curious how people are running navigation when the cell phone is dropped and stepped. Paper maps are great but generally are use to verify my nav device.

FWIW I quit using Garmin gps's a long time ago for the simple fact that the phones with a mapping app are way better at it than the dedicated gps. Phone in airplane mode for nav and inReach and the Messenger app on phone for comms and sos. I know there are holdouts that still use the gps's but everyone I know gave them up a long time ago and none that I know of have had issues with phones in the field for that purpose.

Do you mind sharing what app you’re using?

I've got a Garmin Montana 700i I'd sell you if you want to eliminate the need for your phone. My phone is good enough that I don't use the montana.

I go into the boundary waters of northern MN and text with no problem using satellites. No weather reports tho.

onX for simplicity and what most friends have. You can send pins easily to each other from the app and a couple of friends like the simplicity of that in onX. They don't deal well with the more complicated GAIA. For more detailed layers and such I use GAIA a lot but my subscription ran out and the Outside takeover has mucked it up and increased prices by a lot so I'm on the fence renewing it or not. I've also used GoHunt and others but prefer and settled mostly on onX and GAIA.
