Found the bullet from the buck I shot after Thanksgiving.

It was separated core from the jacket but probably only a 1/2" apart. Was 180 grs Came out at 130grs combined.

Not sure if I would worry about this though as the bullet didn't take a "typical" path through the buck. Hit it left side behind the shoulder and ended in the left side hip almost to the joint. Buck was directly facing me.

Yes I know this was almost a miss.

Pretty common with cup and core hunting bullets to get core-jacket separation. The lead core is not bonded to the outer jacket, the jacket is simply formed around the lead. If you prefer to keep the core and jacket together, a more premium bullet like a bonded bullet or solid copper bullet will prevent this. The "Bonded" means the core and jacket are bonded together to aide in weight retention and prevent separation and some fragmentation.

Hornady Interlock has a ring in the jacket to help lock in the core without a dedicated bonding process. That might be an affordable fix to help mitigate the separation.

It was a hornady American whitetail bullet which is an interlock bullet.

Well, I guess the interlock ring was not effective at that time. Zooming in I can see the ring further down the shank. Looks like bonding or mono bullets are the better solution to jacket separation.

I once just found the jacket of a 100 gr Sierra Gameking while field dressing a doe I took with my 6mm Rem. Just finding the jacket and nothing else concerned me a bit until some time later when I was fleshing the hide for tanning and found the lead core perfectly mushroomed just under the off side hide.
