A number of years ago I got a really good deal on MREs (meals ready to eat) at an army-navy surplus store. The taste wasn't bad and they came with heating bag that you just added water to.

I went back a few years later and that ship had sailed. I used them for field lunches and emergency rations. Do any of you see them out there anymore?

I thought you were being funny, as I took your handle as an Army dude.....

MRE’s aren’t that bad-hell I think they taste way better than any dehydrated meal out there. Prob is, they are heavy to haul around. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve hopefully ate my last MRE many years ago, but for emergency chow, def worth having a few in the hunting vehicle.
Yes they are still around-you just have to watch as some less desirable copy cat versions are also out there.

The mountain MRE’s are pretty good if you can get them. I don’t bother with MRE’s for the same reason as Team4. They are heavy. Plus I had enough of those.

I've eaten a shit ton of them after 8 years in the Army, I dont think Ive eaten on since! They used to be a currency in some places we went. Rural South Korea or Egypt for example, you could trade MREs for practically anything local.
For a hunting meal, they are heavy, and loaded with preservatives and high in sodium. We always broke them down from the big heavy plastic bags they came in and carried just the pieces you were gonna eat, which saves some weight and space.
I sound like a broken record, but one of the biggest "game changer" things to my hunting routine in the last decade, has been dehydrating my own meals. Its really easy to do, tastes great if you start with recipes you actually like to begin with, and they are ultra lightweight and compact. After freeze drying, I vacuum seal them and then throw them in the freezer where they will last pretty much indefinitely. WAY better than an MRE, tastes better, and way better for you.

The MREs fit well in saddle bags and pickup. In my career I got to enjoy K rations, C rations, and seal a meals where the Forest Service contractors placed precooked and vacume sealed food into boiling water.

MREs were a wounderful improvement. Thanks for the info.

By the way not an army dude. Came out 4F in the nam draft. They put me in with the mother rapers and father beaters to be educated and a productive member of society.

I'm just a degenerate horse hunter.

Great thing about them. No prep needed. Rip open & eat. I’ve tried C rats or K rats… can’t remember which 🤮 MRE’s are gourmet in comparison and don’t weigh a ridiculous amount if property field stripped. 👍

LOL...reminds me of Alice's restaurant

Have you ever checked out the Sopackco MRE's? Friend of mine bought some & said they were pretty good

The best part about C-rats was that they came with a key chain can opener and enough napkins to cover inbound and out-bound if you were careful.
My wife & I both have P-38’s on our keychains and there are several stashed in appropriate locations. It’s a can opener and does a great job of that. It’s not a knife but it can do some knife like tasks. It’s not a screwdriver but it can drive and remove some screws. It’s not a pry bar but it can pry some things. I think Patton was mistaken about the M1 Garand.

Edit: that was blasphemous. I love my Garand. I’m going out to beg it’s forgiveness right now.
