Anyone have experience with the inshore fishing around Cancun? good, bad, worth the money or waste of time? going to be there for 10 days in January and looking for outdoorsy things to do.

No direct experience but I believe their tarpon and bonefishing is on par with anywhere else in the gulf and Caribbean.

Ascension bay is worth the drive/bus/taxi. It's pretty much all guided/boat fishing as far as I know. I went out for a day with an outfitter down there, can't remember which one, and cough plenty of bones, hooked a tarpon or two and saw permit as well.

First fish I saw snorkeling in cancun was about a 75# tarpon.

Not Cancun, but gf has dragged me to Florida the last three years in May. After sitting on the beach doing nothing but drinking cocktails and "sight seeing" I started bringing fishing gear and surf fishing. Inexpensive and have a blast. Actually can't wait for this year. Plenty of action on Blues, Pompano, and Whiting to keep me entertained. I guess my point is, better than the alternative of not fishing?

I did a half day guided fishing trip in the lagoon behind the hotel zone a few years ago. It was in March, so a little too early in the season for bones, permit and adult tarpon. We fly fished for baby tarpon in the mangroves to start the morning, then switched to spin gear and caught snook, barracuda, jacks and speckled trout. Not quite the same experience as a true flats fly fishing trip, but it was a good time. Guide was great, the price wasn't bad, and the dock was close to our hotel.

do you remember the outfit you fished with? sounds like what I'm looking for.

This is something I'm very interested in. We don't buy gifts for our kids for Christmas but rather experiences. Typically traveling somewhere. This year's trip is a week in Cancun. I always get shafted on fishing or hunting due to everyone wanting to do other things. I'm either going to fly, spear, or deep sea fish this time. Trip is in February. Is one better over the other this time of year? Sounds like the big tarpon aren't in the area this time of year for fly fishing.

100% recommend the fishing. Catching bones and tarpon on a fly rod is a blast. We take our own gear and diy. Good idea to go guided the first time.
