Long and perfect width, or perfect length and narrow?

I'm a size 11.5 E, smack in-between the most common boot widths of D and EE. If i go to size 12 D the boots feel long but the width is good, if I go with 11.5 EE the boot feels wide. I'm shopping new boots now and I'm looking to narrow my search down so I don't have to try on 20 different models.

So, two questions:

1)If you're between widths and have to choose between a boot that's slightly narrow or slightly wide, which do you prefer?
2)Are there any specific models that have worked well for anyone with a similar foot width situation?

Thanks, folks. The search function didn't locate any threads that addressed this question, apologies if this is redundant.

I always go larger, I don't have a choice. My left foot is .5 size smaller than my right. Also, I always fight cold feet and tight boots make this worse. In fact, I am finding thick socks do too (for me). Now, I leave the front of my laces very loose, wear thinner socks, and tighten only from the ankle/heel up. Point being - I like more room up front.

As to brands, if you are between D and EE, try Meindl Denalis. I have them in 11.5 EE, but they are NOT EE. My Merrell 11 EE Moabs, are perfect - the Meindls, too narrow for me. Might be a great fit for a tweener like you...

It'd be better to go wide and use an insole and thicker socks to take up that volume. If you start with narrow footwear and as you feet swell with hiking and time on them, it'll only get worse. One of the best things you can do is get a 3D scan of your foot......this will tell you precisely what your left and right foot are. Many specialty running store have this capability and it's free.
