I have never owned an 80lb bow and I am thinking I would like to hunt with one next season. Bowtech does not seem to offer one so I am wondering who has some experience with the newer ones. Any good reviews/new ones coming out?

I haven't seen anyone yet who's shooting hasn't deteriorated with an 80#'er. Including my own.

I'd think long and hard about it, and have a backup bow.

There's a lot more benefit to the placement than the power.

Guess I'm turning into that old guy, plus I'm trying to put off shoulder surgery.

Bill off of midwest whitetails always shot an 80lb hoyt but he was a terrible shot on deer. Always blamed it on the deer ducking or not ducking.

I want to pick up speed. I shoot 480-530 TAW depending at 70 lbs. I am happy with those arrow weights. I hunt woods but also hunt a few hayfields. 70 does it. 80 would add options.

PSE, Prime, and Hoyt are the players in the 80lb game. I did have an 80lb EVL 32 I shot at 77lbs and it felt very nice. PSE is making great feeling to performance 80lb bows now. I’ve had multiple Prime 80# bows but prefer the Evolve cam. Wasn’t a big fan Hoyts hybrid but now they have a binary…haven’t tried their version 80lb.

however, I shot my bull and nice whitetail buck this year with a 61lb bow that shoots as fast as most 70lb. and it was very nice only drawing 61lb.

It would be a second bow that would be shot a few shots once a week till next hunting season. Most of my shooting will be low 60s through the winter spring and summer.

I find a lot of people fall into I can not, have not or could not crowd and try to place their limits on others. It is not enjoyable I find to converse with people who think this way. You do not need, less is more than enough, all reasonable statements when somebody is using less and it is enough to get the job done. When somebody wants to use more however, not so much. I hunt with people who say nobody needs 70lbs, 60 is enough. Until they work up to 65 and experience the difference. They say you do not need 500g arrows 400 is more than enough. They shake their heads and scoff. Give them a 500g arrow to mess around with and suddenly they are toying with the idea of a bit heavier arrow.

Its not a mutually exclusive thing, power and accuracy. You can have both.

Wow...for an 80lb itch i think you would need some steroids and not just any old cream. Good luck.

Had a complete pass through, the offside shoulder, of a bull moose at 60 yards this year. Also had 2 pass throughs on a bison, 35 and 50 yards. I’m not saying that’s not possible with less weight, but shooting 80lbs has its benefits. 560g at 282fps.
I will say it’s more difficult to put down for a month or so and pick back up. I need a solid 2 months of shooting every day before season and make sure to keep up practice during season, but I do that regardless. I have a 70lbs bow as well for back up but when I’ve done my part, I can’t tell the difference when shooting the two.

The argument is so old. It’s just dumb. If you can shoot 80 then do it. It will only benefit you in penetration. There is no downside!!

It you can’t shoot 80 then shoot 70. If you can’t shoot 70 then shoot 60.

There are guys that walk into a gym and can’t bench 185. There are guys that can bench 225 10x or more. According to rokslide 70lb is perfect for them both because nobody needs to shoot more than 70.

Last time I checked, there's no discernible way to tell if someone is shooting an 80lb bow by looking at the bow...shoot what you like and be done with it.

FWIW and to answer your question: If it's speed you're after, increased draw weight is one of your options to accomplish that. Give it a gander and see how you like it.

I feel that the 80lb stigma has been bastardized by hunting "celebs", youtube, and social media. It's only 10 more lbs than 70lbs. To some that might feel like pulling back nothing and to some it might feel like pulling back more than you can handle. Only you can be honest with yourself and answer how it truly feels.

I do agree, if you can do it easily, then have at it, there really is no negative to it. If you are working out, stretching, and treating your body right, then its not a big deal. I only jest because at 46, and shooting heavy poundage longbows and recurves my whole life (+30 years, I was shooting 60# and 70# longbows/recurves as a teenager) I have likely caused damage to my elbow and shoulder, and now am thinking about going down to least amount of weight I can effectively draw and shoot consistently with!

Unless you’re specifically after bang on 80lb, the 75lb switchweights on mathews will get you close enough, plus if you change your mind you can change the modules. My Vertix pulls 79.6lb with the 75 mods.

I went to 80 pounds this year. Honestly never put it on a scale so I am only guessing. But bolts are bottomed on 80lb limbs, so I'm 78+ I am confident.

Bow is a 2021 PSE EVO EVL. The Evolve cam is silky smooth. I can shoot it A LOT. Off and On all afternoon. Really is a non issue. I have ZERO experience with any other 80lb bow. I was afraid to make the jump. It's a non issue with that bow/cam combo.

My DL is 28". Kinda hard to get decent speeds being so limited and challenged. This does that.

80# 31" draw 585 grain arrow and an iron will because you never know I might need a full pass though on a Volkswagen
