Am I the only one that continues to say I will take something only to be ignored then see it sell to someone else? I even send messages on the post and private that I need to pay for this and receive nothing back. When I am searching for something and inquire or offer to buy, some folks just do not respond in a timely manner and some don't respond at all. I have had some really good experiences so far with some great sellers but I have come to the conclusion that some of these people aren't really interested in selling their stuff and they aren't taking the post serious. Also, to the ones that say make offer, don't say this if all you can do is get mad when someone makes an offer. I would be thankful that someone is interested in my stuff and welcome any offers. I am not looking to make folks mad but if you say make an offer you open the door to receive it. You should say thank you but I can't take that and counter. I enjoy this site but some people are just too difficult for me to trade with. To those that have been super nice and helpful, I thank you!!

The convention is to send an immediate PM if you are interested in something. That’s more important than posting anything in the thread. A lot of people no longer post in the thread because they think it sets them up for intervention via scammers. A quick “PM sent” in the thread along with an immediate PM is all most people do.

The really good deals around here are gone in minutes. While you are deciding whether to offer $600 for the stainless steel Tikka that is $909 new (not counting tax and shipping) with an asking price of $650 TYD, someone else has probably already paid the seller full asking price.

If the seller doesn’t respond in a timely manner, but continues to bump the ad, then there is something else going on. And if that happens a lot to you, then perhaps the reason is between your chair and your keyboard? I have never had a seller not respond to me at all, but not everyone responds right away. People have jobs, families, hunting trips, etc.

If you are going to make a lower offer, don’t be surprised if someone doesn’t take it. They have no obligation to do so. Just like any other market in the world, this site is full of tire kickers and low ballers. If you really want something, just pay the asking price.

As a seller, I am always willing to consider offers. That doesn’t mean I am going to automatically be grateful for whatever lowball offer you make. Most of the things people sell around here were pretty expensive up front. While some may not be willing to recognize how much less something used is worth, for most people it costs nothing to wait for another buyer who will pay the asking price. This isn’t the last day of a three-day flea market where I am going to have to pack up things that don’t sell. Things here are generally worth whatever someone is willing to pay for them. It’s just a question of how long the seller has to wait for the right buyer to come along.

If I am selling 100 pieces of brass for $50, why are you offering me $40? Because it isn’t worth it? Or because you want to save yourself $10 at my expense? Have a good reason for your offer and put it in the PM. Something like, “I could get the same brass shipped to me from Midway for $40, but I would rather buy it from you at that price.”

As for being unreasonable, yes, those people exist as well. And that’s where the feedback system comes into play.

It absolutely doesn't default to being low ball offers but I appreciate your input. Its just my observation and in most cases so far, I will just buy new somewhere reputable and in some cases find it cheaper. That might be why it sits unsold with everyone making an offer because it just isnt a fair buy. I also dont usually offer any amount but chose to kindly ask what someone would consider taking for something. I wouldn't call that lowballing.

I have dont just what you said asking politely to consider that I can buy it new for X amount and still have folks reply inappropriately. They simply should put FIRM instead of make offer or best offer. I'm not trying to beat anyone out of anything. Just trying to enjoy the site and good conversation.

“What will you take?” is a nonstarter for me. I told you what I will take: the asking price. That’s my offer. It’s on you to accept my offer or make a counteroffer. If I like your counteroffer, I’ll take it.

But it’s not very polite to say, “I know you say you want $100, but what is really your lowest acceptable price? Maybe if I like your real price, I will accept.” I won’t tell you to GTFO, but I sure won’t play that game. Make a sincere offer in good faith.

I'll take that feedback, I am new here so thanks for letting me know that. I will add though that on many occasions I have said I will take it, no offers, no asking what would you consider and I get nothing back for days. I get people have jobs, vacations and such but my life is short and when I am looking to buy something I am not waiting 3 days on someone to decide whether they want to sell it or not when I have offered to purchase at their price. It is a waste of time and if I am looking for something it means I need it. Maybe my expectations are too high but I do feel that some people need to manage their post better.

I wouldn’t worry about those sellers.
I have had great luck so far, if I get no response, I assume the transaction will also be bad communication and move on.

That is a great point and good advice. Thank you!

Is it possible your "I'll take it has someone in front of you that has messaged the same I'll take it only before yours, and the seller is giving the other party time to get there payment sent. The seller could be working or sleeping, that may take 7-10 or more hours then the info is sent to buyer and same thing happens on buyers end. All this may take two or three days till you see sold on the posting and all the while there was communication happening.

It used to not be that way. It used to be the first public "I'll take it" trumped pm's. That way there was a public time stamp, that way everyone could see who the first one is.

I've sold a few hundred things on various forums and I usually sell to the first person who PMs me. If a guy is gonna say "I'll take it" in a thread, they should also send a PM at the same time. Sometimes the seller is looking on their phone for PMs and perhaps didn't go back to look at the thread.

I'll always sell to whomever is first in line. What sucks is when you get an "I'll take it" that is followed by an extended period of silence, and in the meantime I'm getting PMs from other people who want the item. Then me as the seller has to delay those people while I reach out to the "I'll take it guy" via PM to see if he actually wants time item. Sometimes I get no reply or a very delayed reply.

By all means say "I'll take it" in the thread. But immediately send a PM as well.

Pro Tips:

If something is listed close to retail, don't engage.

If the word "CUSTOM" is emphasized in the thread title, don't look.

The more emphasis the seller puts on the quality and condition of the product ie. laying it on thick, the more likely you're getting something with a cigarette burn or snag or stain.

"Never Worn" doesn't mean that their Pomeranian didn't sleep on it.

I’m guessing a lot of guys don’t close a WTS thread until it’s paid/shipped. There may be a day or two there where it’s claimed but still up and they’re not responding to additional dibs. Can’t blame em, sucks to keep putting it back up after a flake backs out.

+1

I've listed a handful of things in the sale section and people reply to the thread instead of PM'ing me. I don't check my threads in the for sale section, not because I don't want to sell the item but my mentality is if someone wants to buy something, they'll PM me. The for sale section isn't for banter
