Same one I have had for years. CVA Optima V2 stainless .50 cal. It's done all I've asked of it without any issues.

CVA has a "Colorado model" MRX in 50cal with a peep sight for just under $540. Its plain jane black/stainless. Its based on the old MR/PR which would actually be ok if you could find one.

The only real issue with the 50cal MRX/LRX line is the ramrod is for loading ONLY. Its not made for swabbing but if you are using BH209 then swabbing is not an issue. The older MR/PR versions had a typical ramrod but no open sights. So that would leave out Colorado ML hunting. Scopes are not allowed.

Does it have a ramrod like the Wolf? If so, that thing unscrews and extends so you can swab. Took me some time after owning one to actually figure that out however. LOL

No it has a collapsible ram rod held together with a bungee cord. That is why you dont see one under the barrel. It comes with a carrying pouch.

After using several different muzzleloaders and ultimately spending a little extra on a Hankins converted CVA Scout SML, I would advise you to look for a used product that was built or converted by Jeff Hankins. He does great work and my Scout shoots amazingly well.

I would definitely recommend any of the Thompson Center Muzzleloaders. I have a Triumph and will never buy another one. It has been super reliable since day one. The gun is very smooth shooting as well. Check one out!

Sadly TC no longer makes MLs and parts are drying up fast. The only one worth buying atm is a old Omega if you can find one in nice shape. There is a aftermarket vendor for breech plugs and his plugs are great. They will virtually never wear out since the flash hole is a tungsten carbide bushing you can replace IF you ever did wear out the flash hole.

S&W owns whats left of TC and they want nothing to do with MLs anymore. Last i heard they are selling TC.

The CVA Optima V2 with the thumbhole stock I’ve got is hard to beat. That thing shot 1-1.5” groups with loose Pyrodex by vol. Shrunk to .75-1” groups with BH209 by weight. It’s a shooter. Not sure what you’d really gain in the real world by spending the extra money on the Accura

I'd find a clean used TC Hawkin or Renegade, or a used Lyman Great Plains. But I'm a traditional ML guy (I shoot a flint). Let us know what you end up with!

i agree with Runningwater! i am a traditional muzzleloader guy myself and only shoot flintlocks but its hard to beat the models he mentioned for a cap gun. in my experience a quality flintlock is more reliable than a cap gun in bad weather. all 3 of mine have Chambers lock and spark like crazy even in the rain or wet snow.

I have been successful finding TC Encores and Omega’s in pawn shops. A few Encores have had crappy barrels and they still manage to shoot a 3/4 - 1 1/8” with a 300 gn XTP with. Harvester crush rib sabot @ 100 yds.

just get a knight bighorn(if you can find one anymore) and call it good. if your state allows inlines anyhow. then get a 209 breech plug and swap the factory musket one out. durable and shoot well.

Knight Bighorn would be high on my list. I just recently picked up a CVA Accura MR-X and it is very accurate so far and easy to load for. Both of these are under the $600 range for at least the "base" option firearms. My Knight Wolverine 209 (Same as today's Bighorn with different ignition) has been a very good rifle. Easy to shoot well, easy enough to clean and very reliable. Used this rifle with a peep sight for most of the time I have had it. Until just recently I only used the Peep Sight, but a few years ago I did put a scope on it when our state changed to allowing them.

In that range, I'll second a TC Renegade. I've had one in 50 for about 45 years. Converted to enclosed nipple to shoot BH 209. Put a Skinner peep on it and those with good eyesight have an easy 100 yard shooter.

We had one on a local msg board a few days ago that looked in excellent shape. Finally dropped to $200 and no takers.

Go with a Knight. Made in the US and they can be converted with just the purchase of a new bolt and breech for different states (as I understand it from reading other’s posts).

Same one I have now. CVA Optima V2. Does everything I ask of it. Easy to clean and has a great trigger and stock that fits me very well.

I know a lot of traditional muzzleloader hunters consider this sacrilegious, but I purchased a Traditions Nitrofire last year and I freaking love it. I know it's not legal in every state, but it is in Nevada, and it was everything I hoped it would be last year on an Antelope hunt and then some. Great system.
