It was for me too. But I came as single in my early 20s, sort of footloose and fancy free without much in the way of responsibilities, and worked low paying ranch jobs and labor jobs, had various less than ideal living arrangements, eventually got a job with better pay and benefits, married a Wyoming gal, and over years and years gradually improved my life circumstances.

I think it would have been much harder to come as a married man in my thirties with a couple of kids, try to buy a house, find a job at whatever my trade was, and hope my wife found a comparable job. Not impossible, because it’s been done, but harder.
