If you could "build" your "do all" lower 48 hunting rifle......

I’m building it now, except next I’m doing a 338 to Be even better

Cartridge - 300 nmi
Action - defiance Ruckus ultra lite skelo full rail
Barrel - 22” proof 1:9”
Trigger - trigger texh
Scope - ZCO
Rings - hawkins
Suppressor - deadair nomax 33
Stock - manners eh1

Going to probably do a 338 reaper next and those two should be perfect

Had mine built summer 2024. I plan to tweak the scope and suppressor, haven't had any issues with either one, i just want to see if there can be improvement. If i had no budget, I'd probably go really nuts with the scope (i try not to let my mind go there) and get a Manners PPFA stock.

It has already dne very well on deer sized game. I hope to shoot an elk with it this year

This is what I built:
- 7mm PRC
- Defiance Anti X nitrided and replaced hollow bolt handle with solid
- Bartlein CF 22" 1:8 M24/M40
- Trigger Tech 2 Stage Special Curved
- Zeiss V4 6-24 but a NF NX6 is attractive
- Ruff's Bubble rings
- TBAC Ultra 7, a Magnus S-RR is in my future. I wonder how an Ultra 7RR would fair...
- Manners LRH
- Hawkins BDL Hinged Floorplate
- Atlas PST BT47-LW17

I built mine but it’s got a 300prc barrel on it currently
-7prc
-Defiance anti x
-Proof senduro 22” 1-8
-Leupold mark 5 5-25 pr1 “drop tested and proved” lol
-Triggertech diamond flat 2 stage trigger
-Um premier rings
-Um reaper can
-Xlr chassis la
-triple pull mdt bipod
-Xlr mags

If proof made a 6.5 wby rpm prefit that’s a good choice too for caliber.

As the title says, money isn't an option here, if you could build a "do all" hunting rifle (pronghorn, deer, elk, moose, black bear, etc) what are you building?

- Cartridge
- Action
- Barrel/specs of barrel
- Trigger
- Scope
- Mount/rings
- Suppressor/brake/bare muzzle
- Stock
- Bottom Metal

I'm really interested in seeing what people say.

30-06: 150 TTSX, 165 AB, and 178 ELD-X
Terminus Zeus QC
18” + TBAC Ultra7
22” + Brake
TriggerTech Diamond
Nightforce NX8 4-32x50
Nightforce Rings
McMillan Hunter’s Edge Sporter
BDL bottom metal

But, that’s this week. Next week it might be something else.

I can't really choose just one, because for most applications I prefer a vertical grip I also hunt deer on the ground and I can't stand the vertical grip when holding the rifle in the ready carry for hours.

if pressed for just one, here is what I choose..

Defiance ANTI XM
XM BDL bottom metal 3.2 COAL
22" proof Carbon
B n A trigger
7mm SAUM 160LRX or 17 ELDX
McMillian Game warden 2.0
NXS 2.5-10x42 in seekins low rings

160LRX or 17 ELDX over RL 26 (I would happily try the 170 Terminal Ascent if they released as a component)

Sadly no can for me (live in CT and hunt every year in Canada)

I actually already own two:

Remington Model Seven SS in 7-08 with 20” factory barrel and McMillan edge fill stock. SWFA 6x scope.

Remington Model Seven SS in 7 SAUM with 22” factory barrel and B & C stock. SWFA 3-15x42 scope.

I’ve just about given up on “one gun to rule them all.” For anything in Texas it’s an easy decision: Springfield waypoint in 6.5cm. Stupid accurate.

Anything out west I’m still bouncing around between something in a 7 or something in a 30

I did this, for the upper 10 provinces and 3 territories (aka 51st state), but I'm sure it will cover the other 48 states, and Hawaii, and prolly Alaska, except anywhere there is higher ft/lbs thresholds for certain critters. In reality just for Alberta as no plans to hunt anywhere else, and who knows maybe we join you as the 51st to get the party started up here? ;)

Sako 90 Peak 308
NF ATACR 1-8x DMX
NF 1" height (medium) 4-bolt rings

I think bare scoped rifle right at 7 lb 3 oz (no accessories/caps etc.)

Currently run it with few extras, objective flip cap that came with it, a scope tube picatinny rail pointing forward ahead of turret for qd style o-light light/laser to slap on for camp night stuff. A mk machine bubble level just behind turret, a 2 round velcro shell holder on stock. I think it's around 7 lb 6.5 oz with those goodies onboard.

Got one of the first ones to make it to this side of puddle and killed with it right away, several hundred rounds later, few seasons, handful of animals, several scopes. It's a grail rifle for me, and now I think I've got the grail scope on her too, obsessed with the combo. She loves Hornady white box match 168 eldm at 2592 fps for current lot. Shoots well out to 640 so far on range, killed only to 275 so far.

Not the hottest chick, sort of awkward looking, but she has skills and it's a passionate love affair, we cuddle a lot, can't keep my hands off her.

Bonus: Off the shelf, slap together at kitchen table, and giver.

My current do-it-all hunting rig:

Zermatt Origin action.
20” Bartlein 3b barrel, chambered in .308 Win, threaded 5/8x24
Triggertech Diamond trigger.
McMillan CF Game Hunter stock.
Hawkins Precision Hunter bottom metal and mag.
US Reaper suppressor.
2-12 Gen 2 Helos BTR
Shoots good and carries good.

Only change planned is replacing the Helos with the Shoot2Hunt 3-18 as soon as it shows up.

Give me some feedback on running an LPVO on a hunting rifle. I've got an NX8 1-8 that I've considered swapping onto my 22 creed to save half a pound and make it much more handy. I'm just concerned about the limited light gathering and less precise clicks.

I'm really interested in seeing what people say.

-Cartridge- 6 arc/creed (<500yds)
- Action- tikka w/ fluted bolt
- Barrel/specs of barrel- 20-22in carbon sendero light profile
- Trigger- triggertech diamond 2 stage flat Trigger shoe.
- Scope- similar spec to the vortex razor hd lht 4-22 but reliable. FFP/MIL.
- Mount/rings- depending on scope
- Suppressor- something lightweight 4-6in length.
- Stock- black mdt hnt26, non arca folder, add a lightened metal arca rail.

Slowly building basically exactly this as a "do all" hunting rifle for all my Aussie hunting/culling.
Everything from pigs and goats to deer, feral camels/donkeys/horses.

**the Suppressor will only be allowed here for culling jobs, not personal "fun" hunting.

Cartridge: 5.56 NATO
- Action: Direct Impingement AR-15
- Barrel/specs of barrel 20" button-rifled, nitride coated, 1:7 Twist, government profile, NATO chamber, with White Oak .001" oversize barrel extension.
- Trigger Rock River Arms 2 stage National Match
- Scope: Weaver 2 -7 X 32mm (usually shoot A2 irons)
- Mount/rings La Rue 1.90" rise
- Suppressor/brake/bare muzzle A2 flash hider
- Stock A2 butt, A2 grip, non-floated A2 handguards
- Bottom Metal: Not Applicable

I'm an old geezer. I did all my "adventure hunting" three decades ago when I was young enough and single enough to enjoy it. I shot my 20th and last elk three years ago. Still- hunting in a snowstorm was all shits and giggles until I dropped the hammer on a bull and tagged it. What happened after tagging was too much like work for me to find joy in.

So, going forward, the biggest thing I plan to shoot is a mule deer. My local whitetails are small and stupid. An average shot on them for me is 35 yards. Where I hunt them, the longest possible shot I could take would be around 100 yards. I like hunting feral pigs and plan to keep on doing that, but when I find a sounder, the pig I want to shoot out of it is about the size of an adult javelina. If I get lazy, I might shoot one beyond 200 yards, but my shots on those are generally not more than 100 yards. I might have a pronghorn hunt or two left in me.

I went 5.56 NATO because I can now essentially duplicate .250 Savage terminal ballistics with it, and I killed a LOT of mule deer stone-cold dead with it, as well as three pronghorn, two caribou, and one bull elk, and it complies with the CMP Service Rifle rule book.

I went AR-15 because I like to shoot CMP Games Modern Military and Service Rifle matches, but also because an AR-15 A4 is style of rifle that I personally shoot the absolute best without the aid of a bench or rest. Also, I like to shoot a lot, and the AR-15 is great for high volume use because I can cheaply and easily fix anything that might break or wear out on a D.I.Y. basis.

Basically, I don't need a rifle for the hunting in North America and Africa that I used to do when I was younger. I want a rifle suited to the shooting that I actually do now and plan to keep on doing until my time on earth is through.

In keeping with the spirit of this thread, however, here's what I'd do if I was 30 years younger:

I'd buy a Remington Model Seven CDL in the nicest condition I could find one in, I'd put a two-stage Timney trigger in it. I'd mount my 2-7X 32mm Weaver to it using old-fashioned Weaver 2-pieces bases and Weaver USA strap-style ring mounts. As long as it is chambered in .243 Winchester, .260 Remington, or 7mm-08, I'd be happy. I don't really care which one of those cartridges it is chambered in because, in my unpopular view, they all do more or less the same thing out to 300 yards in the real world, and in the real world, I don't want to pull the trigger on a game animal farther away than that.

Been shooting both back to back lately, and again today.

1st still love the nx8, not much has, or can do, more for size/weight. It’s a rugged little tool and would not hold me back filling tags vs atacr. The atacr solved fit desire to my Sako and optic performance from 6x-8x, it’s just more luxury level glass at all mags and gives that pop and smile inducing experience when you get into it at any magnification.

Here’s the differences as I see em so far.

Atacr:
Love the hockey tape added grab ass the whole eyepiece to change mag. I came to love this very quickly. In my case it will live at 4x and a quick palm roll over the top smacks it to 8x. Like a two position scope lol. And it’s a fat long chunk of eyepiece to fit in hand well. As soon as i switched to the the nx8 I instantly undid the focus lock ring doing same thing trying to get from 4x up to 8x for range work, now I gotta add some tape to the nx8 as that inadvertent switch to out of focus will happen again lol.
Better eye relief and eyebox ease.
Image quality and pop all the way to 8x.
0.1 mil/click is nice.
Longer scope, and bonus that it’s all from turret back, fits over more actions and or longer lop and making eye relief easier to set at high mag, which is case for my Sako 90 peak with 14” lop.
Apparently it can transmit more light, feels like it but could be combined with the better glass. Love the objective flip cap that came with it. Don’t use eye piece caps so it’s still in box. And is there anything tougher? It’s a chunky brick but i think still looks ok on the Sako as they are a little thicker and chunkier than skinny lightweights but does have a bit of gorilla on tricycle vibes.

For the nx8:
I’ve touched on some things already. Image above 6x falls off including brightness. 0.2 mil/click although hasn’t been limiting me on two rifles I’ve put it on. Eyebox tighter and I don’t notice the apparent fov advantage prolly because i would rarely use it under 3x? Default is 4x for both for me. Scope mounting versatility can be detriment while its size/weight often the advantage that offsets that. It’s a tiny little brick. Would look/feel better on a slender lightweights but would need ensure mounting length will work. Full length rail solves that easily.

What they share:
The NF feel and controls, all of them, illum control, turrets, mag ring tension ideal for each (fingers vs palm). I think the nx8 illum detents a little stronger feeling between off and on but the atacr wheel is larger diameter, irrelevant. Adjusting turrets also easy to feel clicks, quality feel. And the reticle...just love everything about it.

Well I’ll be, I can post some pics. 👍

What barrel maker? Shot anything heavier than the 160’s in it?

Just built a do all and broke it in today!
Tikka 25 Creedmoor
Was going to do 6cm but wanted to be different.
20” PBB 1-7.5
TBAC Ultra 7 6.5 version
MDT HNT 26 arca folder
Trijicon Credo HX 4-16x50
UM Tikka Rings
Might get swapped out for NX6 soon.
8.75#s all in.

Attached is a 10 shot group, I pulled shot #8, otherwise a pretty great group! 134 ELDMs
@ 2725fps…will speed up, not broken in yet.
