I had a brain bleed in 2016 and was told my stent from 2005 was about done and I would need an additional one. In 2020 he told me my aorta need to be replaced and I asked about the stent. "medication will help, its too early. Then I got AFIB and his excuses kept coming. I was getting slower and slower and was getting my "house" in order as I thought I was done. I went to another cardiologist who LISTENED to me. After his tests I needed a triple bypass, and Aorta replacement! August 2023 I had the surgery, but two weeks later I had to have a pacemaker to control the afib. I live for deer hunting and worked my butt off to hunt. I got out 11 times and saw 9 deer, all little ones.
In short, if your issues fall on deaf ears fired them and get another one. At almost 70 I intend to keep hitting the woods all year long. I have a totally different attitude and have bought several new guns instead of selling them before the surgery!

I stay local for simple every day stuff. When something is really wrong or major surgery is suggested we go to the Mayo Clinic.

My oldest son and daughter both had serious heath issues that were misdiagnosed by local doctors and Mayo figured out the correct diagnosis in less than 2 days. In my son's case, Children's Hospital wanted to do major surgery and gut him like a fish. They were going to hook him up to a bag at 13. Doctor's told me he would die without surgery. He never needed any surgery. Completely wrong diagnosis by local Dr's in both cases.

If what you are being told doesn't make sense or you're not getting better, go somewhere else.....quickly. Second opinion's can save your life.

Good for you for switching doctors!

Too many people put doctors on a pedestal. Doctors are no different than people in any other profession, there’s always going to be some bad apples.

I’ll disagree with the above post on going to a medical clinic as a cure-all. In my experience with that, doctors that train other doctors, tend to have very large egos, sometimes seemingly unable to listen to their patients, as well. Then, when a procedure needs to take place, it’s likely a student who is learning, doing it. The combination of the two doctors, is not always the best scenario for the patient.

Do you research, and consider reviews when selecting a doctor.

Before my hip surgeries, the local surgeons had never seen my condition and could not diagnose. BUT at least they were confident and would "give it their best shot"

We went to Mayo clinic, and after one visit were ushered to a surgeon who diagnosed my condition on the spot--he did dozens of those procedures a year.

Few doctors will tell you if they don't know something. Many will perform/prescribe something that could be detrimental to you without a second thought. Everyone's intentions are good, but egos and incompetence plague the medical field just like any other.

”You don’t know what you don’t know”
Medicine is a very broad, complicated field. Expecting a primary care doctor to be expert in all things is a prescription for unhappiness, let alone an ”advanced provider”. The best primary care docs know when to send you off to the appropriate specialist, the others keep you around to your detriment. So if you need specialty care, how do evaluate your options?
My process and a recent event. As most men in their 70s or younger I had been having prostate issues for 10yrs,was on medication for it which had the side effect of reducing my exercise tolerance. Climbing steep hillsides was take 25 steps then rest. Could walk 10 miles on flat ground but hillsides or mountains were a problem. Decided to get it fixed and off the drug. Researched various surgical and minimally invasive options, turp, laser, water blasting and steam. List in order from most to least invasive and number of complications. Decided on steam, developed at Mayo, thought about going there but knew would be done probably by fellow or resident physician, not the guy that developed it. Found the company that produced the equipment used for the procedure and on their website had a list of all trained users in the US as well as their regional experts(centers of excellence). Found the physicians in my area that did it and looked for a mid career(50-60) operator with lots of experience but adopting new procedures not stuck in the past. Had it done in the office with local, back to peeing like a race horse in 3 weeks with no complications. His reviews online were good but said he had a distant personality, not warm and personable. One really bad review. Friend of mine, an anesthesiologist from MT has prostate Ca, went thru the same doc and procedure evaluation process and went to SLC for robotic prostatectomy, all good. Choose wisely, educate yourself or find someone you trust to do the evaluation of your providers.
Long winded post as usual.

If the hair stands up on the back of your neck (or if something just doesn't make sense), go get a second opinion. Medical conditions can be complicated as hell.

Medicine, like everything else in life, follows the bell curve. Some really bad Dr's, mostly competent, middle of the road, and some really good ones. All the degree tells you is they can pass a test.

Sadly my Doc is retiring. I had it good with him as he is a old hunting buddy since 1987.
So I am starting my search for a new primary care doc. On one hand I hate having to find a new doc but on the other I sort of welcome a fresh perspective with my health.
Hopeful I will find a good one for me.

We've all heard it. They don't call it a practice for nothing. I've had 4 doctors in 2 years, they all quit. Seem's nobody wants to work for large health corporations. How can they treat you when you get 10 minutes a year in their office? Luckily for myself I don't need to see them regularly. From some of the post's the Doc's remind of todays mechanics, parts changers.

I have seen first hand that the guy with the super deep pockets can get immediate response from his Doctor when others have to take 6 months for an appointment.

Jemez got it right.

Fire 'em? You mean like I did with the doctor who diagnosed me as Type ll diabetic after nothing but one blood test claiming >14 A1C. Full on insulin and Metaformin prescribed for six weeks until I went to another guy who re-tested with 5.6 A1C. A second opinion never hurts!
