That depends if I can get my buddies on bulls early in the hunt. If I can get them legitimate shots at good bulls early, I may get picky. If one of them shoots a bull and a cow hangs around the ruckus to long, she'll be in trouble. Also, if I get a chance at a cow that isn't to daunting of a packout when I am solo, I will take her. Just to get the opportunity to pack out an entire elk on my own. Something.g I think I want to do to say I have done it.

If it's a legal animal it gets an arrow. My first three years Elk hunting I passed on cows an calfs only to bring home nothing. The 4th time I took one home. 15mins into our hunt on opening morning an I was done. Given that chance again an I'll take the shot again.

I passed on 56 cows and raghorns this year. My daughter has a late cow tag so I wasn't too concerned. I don't buy any meat except for chicken so if she hadn't had the tag I never would have passed. I'm wishing I would have shot one now because we have already eaten most of her cow...

I can usually get a cow tag along with my bull tag so they will get the pass at first. Utah also allows extended archery dates where i live so if it comes to that ill shoot a cow this year. Held out for a bull last year and ate 1 of my 2 elk tags... (Filled the cow tag)

Good question...my answer has always been yes - I'd shoot any Cow or legal bull. But got my first bull last year - and have to admit I love staring at those antlers:) But I might like serving up elk to the family even more...I'm usually looking at only 5 full days to hunt...I guess I better shoot! I'll never regret shooting a cow...for an IL boy with 5-6 days each year in elk camp...any archery elk should make you smile.

Surprisingly, I have had more close encounters with bulls than cows...I'm led to believe a mature cow is harder to arrow than a raghorn...

I'd shoot a cow right away during archery this year, then again my bull tag isn't good until rifle season....

Being my first elk season here in CO, I will be happy with any shot I get. Primary goal is meat in the freezer this year.

It will be my first year hunting elk and I'm holding out for any bull until my last 2 days of hunting. I know everyone says to shoot the first legal elk you see, but if all I wanted was meat I'd walk across the street and buy a grass fed cow from my neighbor for WAYYYY cheaper than it costs to hunt elk. Now ask me this question after getting my arse kicked after hiking around on a mountain my first day and my answer might change! ;)

I say a mature cow is a trophy in her own right. Besides that, they are so good to eat. Cow's be dyin unless I have a particular bull I'm targeting.

I'm doing a 21 day hunt this year. I will say that as tempting as it would be to shoot a cow opening day I'm going to hold out for the first couple of weeks and probably not until mid week on the third week. Hopefully I'll draw my muley tag too just in case I get blessed enough the first week or so I can still hunt.

Firstly it depends if I get drawn. I have had a 5 year dry spell on getting drawn for elk.

I have all three of my primary areas ready to go, and since this is my first year archery in almost 3 decades, anything in front of my arrow within 40 or so yards will get stuck. So much so, that I have put in for corresponding Mule Deer hunts that run concurrently with the with the elk hunts. The elk tags are either sex, and the mule deer is forked antler only, so I will have a cooler of ice back at camp, and I will hunt my full 10 allotted days, with nothing legal getting passed on.
