ideas for pier fishing

Anyone have a good rod and reel set up idea as well as tackle ideas for pier fishing near the outer banks ?

I used to just make double drop leaders with a pyramid sinker on bottom and use a blood worm on one hook and a shrimp on the other. You can buy the leaders but they are simple to make with two loops made with double overhand knots.

What time of year and what do you want to catch? Big difference between kingfish and whiting

Does depend on what you expect to fish for.

We do some surf fishing every now and again when on beach vacations - 7 ft ugly stik, 4000 shimano spinning rod, 30# braid, 25# leader, double dropper with 1-1/0 hooks, 2-4 oz pyramid sinker and fleas or shrimp for bait. Clam will work for bait too.

While not in the surf, have caught 15-20-25# soon, reds, and black drum on the same rods. Most likely gonna catch whiting or croakers.

Do some youtube or google searches on how to read the surf. You want an area with a trough or an outward pulling current. The youtube videos will show what they look like.

You don't have to cast a mile, just get bait into trough or some current flow. If you put a mask on and get into the water, you'll see fish all the way up to the breakers rolling onto the beach.
