Ideas for hauling goats

I have a couple of goats a buddy gave me. They're good sized and about 2 years old, ready to work.

The issue I'm having is trying to figure out how to haul them into the backcountry. I have an F150 with the 5'7" bed.

I would prefer to not do a trailer for a couple different reasons. Have any of you guys hauled them in your pickup and how?

I've thought about a high rise canopy, building racks, etc. On a budget so I'm not going to go buy a marketed goat hauler for $2k+.

Do you have a link for reference? I can’t picture a dog crate big enough to hold a goat that’s 37” at the back and 160+lbs

Load em up and tie a very short rope to the front and middle of the box. They won't care. I wouldn't want to do this with more than a couple.

Guy I know hauled his kids 4H goats to the fair in the dog boxes he uses for hounds haha

They also make products like this for moving smaller live stock

I built a rack out of 2x4s and 1x6s it worked well

You probably know, but I belive at 2 years old you still want to pack them with only light weight. It seems like 4 years old is when their bones and body can handle heavier weights.

Dog Crate

This will work, you want the XL model. I haul the kids 4-H sheep in one. It will fit 2 lambs in the 140# range fine. That hauler pictured above is nice but will be expensive. It also takes up the entire bed of your pickup. The wire cage will still leave room.

I just hauled a 148# lamb 4 hours in it last weekend. They can lay down, stand up and turn around. They don't need to be able to run kick and play in it.

You can also look on youtube. There are instructions on building them from combination panels. The dog crate is cheaper, especially if you can;'t weld it yourself.

Two choices if you don’t trailer, goats or gear , can’t do both
Been hauling goats and sheep my whole life and they will use up a pickup bed in a hurry. Plus goats have their own gear they need

I haul mine in a tall canopy. Works great. Mine are all 210-265 lb monsters and I've had 5 in my 8' bed with room for more.
I would love to see someone try and load a big goat into a crate.
Also avoid complete open systems for long trips. Across town to a fair is totally different than down the hwy in cold weather. Your going to end up with sick and stressed out boys.

A couple IBC tote cages might work. Typical size is 40” x 48” footprint and either 46” (275 gallon) or 53” (330 gallon) tall. I see lots of tote cages advertised on Facebook Marketplace for $30-40. I’ve used them to haul young beef calves in my pickup bed a few times.
