My hunting partner is looking to purchase his own shelter. We hunt together 95% of the time and would like to cover all our bases. I own a Megatarp and will be getting a Sawtooth within the next few months. We primarily backpack hunt Colorado with float trips planned to Alaska in the near future. Right now we’re leaning towards a Hilleberg or similar bombproof 4 season tent. Given our current setup, which shelters would you be looking at? If you think a Hilleberg is the right move which model would you recommend and why?

I totally agree one needs a family of tents :).

I buddy of mine has started to join me on hikes. My Hilleberg Nallo 3 has worked very well for the times there have been two of us. It is not freestanding so you need a nice flat spot to set it up. If this could be an issue you may want to look at one of their freestanding tents but I don't see it being a problem for us.

Is he going to stay by himself in the new tent or are you looking for a tent for both of you? My dad and I have been using a Hilleberg Nallo 3 in Colorado for years and it works fine for the two of us and our gear (backpacking spike camp). This year, my brother is going with us. I just ordered up a Tarptent Scarp 1 for one of us to use. It is basically the same as a Hilleberg Akto.

If I had to choose 3 shelters, they would be a good canvas wall tent, a packable floorless shelter, and a good packable 4-season tent.
